摘要:
Summary. The incidence of neural tube defects (NTD) was 2.12 per 1000 births and that of anencephaly was 1.29 per 1000 births when we reviewed the 40 997 consecutive births between 1981 and 1986 in the major maternity hospital in the eastern Black Sea region of Turkey. There was a significant increase in the incidences of NTD and anencephaly after 1986 to 4.39 and 2.46 per 1000 births respectively (P<0.000l; P<0.005). Although this might be a coincidence, it may be due to the nuclear contamination of the region following the Chernobyl accident.

摘要:
Summary. In the county of Fyn (about 500 000 inhabitants) which is a well defined and representative 10% sample of the total Danish population, 15 total birth cohorts were scrutinized for the occurrence of anorectal malformations (ARM). All the patients were followed until the age of 7 or death. In a total of 96 073 births, 29 cases were observed; one concordant monozygotic pair was counted as one case. The study showed the point prevalence at birth to be 3.0 per 10000; almost the same frequency has been found in Sweden whereas other figures from Europe and North America are lower. Children with ARM have in general a poor prognosis, largely due to the many associated anomalies. In this material, 11 of 12 isolated ARM cases survived until age 7, but five of these had significant handicaps. Out of 17 probands with associated anomalies, only seven survived until age7, all of them having some handicap. This group of patients spent at least 15 times more days in hospital than an age‐matched group from the same region until age 7, and they underwent a considerable number of operations. The study showed an increased frequency of chromosome anomalies among children with AR

摘要:
Summary.Congenital defects and other disorders have been reported in association with malignant liver tumours. In order to assess their significance, a population‐based survey was undertaken on children aged less than 15 years diagnosed with malignant liver tumours during the 30 years 1957–1986. The cases were identified from information collected by the West Midlands Regional Children's Tumour Registry. Pertinent data were extracted from their clinical records, and the original biopsy and any necropsy material were reviewed by a panel of three paediatric pathologists. Of the 50 eligible cases registered, eight were excluded because histology review showed that they had non‐malignant conditions (3) or malignancies of extra‐hepatic origin (4) or because no pathological material was available (1). The diagnoses in the remaining 42 cases were hepatoblastoma (27), hepatocellular carcinoma (3), rhabdomyosarcoma (6), rhabdoid tumour (3) and yolk sac tumour (3). The incidence of primary malignant liver tumours was 1.20 per 106person years and that of the hepatoblastoma sub‐group was 0.77 (average childhood population of the West Midlands for the time period being 1166500). The presenting clinical, radiological and biochemical features were similar to those reported in other series and the ethnic and social class distributions were unremarkable compared with the local population. Congenital defects or other possibly related features were present in nine (21%) patients. Our results, taken with other report
