Summary.In a follow‐up study of the pregnant women interviewed in the Nutrition Canada survey, we investigated predictors of intrauterine growth retardation (≤ 10th percentile of the birthweight‐gestational age distribution for the 1972 Canadian population), and pre‐term delivery (<37 completed weeks of gestation), by classifying these two endpoints as either small‐for‐gestational age and not pre‐term (SGA‐NPT), or not small‐for‐gestational age but pre‐term (NSGA‐PT). Education, age, household income level, number of previous livebirths, number of cigarettes smoked per day while pregnant, alcohol consumption (spirits only), serum Vitamin C and haemoglobin levels, pre‐pregnancy weight, height, and sex of the infant were related to NSGA‐PT deliveries in univariate analyses; serum Vitamin A, smoking history, calorie intake, height and pre‐pregnancy weight were similarly associated with the risk of SGA‐NPT outcomes. When considered jointly in multivariate logistic regression analysis, however, the significant predictors were reduced to: height and pre‐pregnancy weight for SGA‐NPT and mother's education, sex of the infant, and

Summary.The aetiology of Perthes' disease of the hip, avascular necrosis of the head of the femur, is unknown. Children with the disease have a generalised abnormality of growth. A similar disproportionate growth is found in chicks given a diet deficient in manganese. In Liverpool, which has the highest incidence of Perthes' disease reported anywhere in the world, children with the disease were shown to have lower blood manganese levels than controls. This is evidence that manganese deficiency around the time of birth may be a cause of Perthes' disease, but the results require confirmation.

Summary.Sixty‐six pregnant women and 46 doctors were interviewed about their preferences for chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis for prenatal diagnosis in a hypothetical situation where the indication was late maternal age. The standard gamble method was used to calculate each individual's degree of preference for one procedure over the other (utility) expressed in terms of the risk of miscarriage associated with the preferred procedure that would be tolerated in order to have that procedure. Utilities for each group were calculated and compared. Pregnant women nominated a median utility for CVS of a miscarriage rate of 0.9%, while doctors nominated a median utility for CVS of a miscarriage rate of 1.2%. The difference between these utilities was not statistically significant. The method described in this study can enable potential consumers of a new procedure to provide the minimum ‘clinically important difference’ between a new procedure and an existing procedure necessary for calculation of the sample size in a controlled clinical

Summary.Documentation of infant care practices (clothing, bedding and room heating) was undertaken in an area where the postneonatal mortality rate is 9.3 per 1000 live births. Three hundred and eleven infants (mean age 5 weeks) were studied in their own home during winter and spring. Low room temperatures were associated with low socioeconomic status, but not consistently with clothing or bedding thicknesses. The estimated thickness of bedding covering infants was less if their mothers were less well educated. Infants at high risk for possibly preventable postneonatal mortality, based on a locally developed scoring system, had less bedding and colder rooms. Ideas of illness management were often inappropriate, in that a large number of mothers would further wrap up their infants if they had a cold (58%), were febrile (8%) or had a convulsion (21%). The clothing and bedding appropriate for different environmental conditions in health and illness needs physiological evaluation. Meanwhile parents should be reminded of the risks of both hypothermia and hyperthermia.
