SummaryProstaglandin E2vaginal pessaries (3 mg) were compared with conventional amniotomy and oxytocin infusion for induction of labour in a study comprising 100 primigravidae and 60 multigravidae in each group. The patients who received prostaglandin pessaries had a better outcome. The differences were greater for those patients with a low Bishop score (<5). The prostaglandin-treated patients had fewer caesarean sections either for failed induction or fetal distress (P<0·01); the incidence of infants with low Apgar scores was lower and there were fewer postpartum haemorrhages (P<0·01)

SummaryA group of patients with high risk pregnancies, including previous caesarean sections, had labour induced with vaginal pessaries containing 3 mg of prostaglandin E2. No maternal or fetal complications were encountered and the caesarean section rate was 9 per cent. With modern standards of obstetric care, patients. with high risk pregnancies can safely have labour induced by this method

SummaryThe antibacterial role ofβ-lysin in amniotic fluids was studied by immunological and physical chemical means using groups of patients from higher and lower socioeconomic sectors of the population. The bactericidal activity against Gram-positive bacilli was independent of the zinc ion concentration and did not differ between the two populations. The antibacterial activity againstEscherichia coliwas found to be zinc dependent, differed markedly between the two groups, and could be removed by a divalent anion chelating agent, 1,10-phenanthroline. Activity could then be restored by the addition of zinc, but not by the addition of cobalt, magnesium, manganese or calcium ions. These data were confirmed by electron microscopy of the bacteria. The mean concentration of amniotic fluid zinc in the high socioeconomic patients was found to be almost four times higher than that observed in the low socioeconomic patients' fluids.

SummaryThe effect of Doppler ultrasound (external cardiotacography) on fetal movements was evaluated in 90 women. Fetal movements were recorded by the patients for 20 minutes, after which the ultrasound equipment was connected unbeknown to the woman. Fetal heart rate and fetal movements were then recorded for an additional 20 minutes. The number of fetal movements registered was compared to the daily fetal movement recording. The results show that Doppler ultrasound used for continuous fetal heart rate monitoring does not influence fetal movements in normal, or mild or severe high risk pregnancies
