AbstractOne hundred and twenty‐one patients have been treated for eye lid basal cell carcinomas with cryosurgery during the last 7 years. The condition resolved completely after treatment in all patients with no recurrences observed so far. Most patients have been followed for more than 2 years. Complications were few and minor. AbstractThe blood coagulation factor XIII catalyzes the crosslinking of fibrin monomers at the end of the coagulation cascade. Additional functions are the enzymatic coupling of fibrinectin to itself, fibrin, and collagen. We located the two subunits of factor XIII in 20 surgically obtained periretinal membranes, using double label immunofluorescence microscopy. Both subunits of factor XIII could be detected in all specimens. The positive staining in all specimens examined prompted us to determine the source of factor XIII. The abundant fibroblastic cells did not contain factor XIII. Macrophages, half of which stained for the α‐subunit of factor XIII could not account for the presence of factor XIII because these cells were not present in all specimens, and did not stain for theβ‐subunit. Factor XIII is probably derived from the exudation of plasma and platelets through disrupted blood‐ocular barriers. AbstractWe have developed a simple new method of evaluating visual function in young children about 15 to 36 months of age. Our Grating Discs system consists of six discs with a striped pattern and one homogeneous disc. One striped disc and the homogeneous disc are presented simultaneously, and the examiner observes whether the subject can discriminate between the two. The patterned discs have vertical stripes of different widths from 16 to 0.5 mm. At a testing distance of 57 cm, the visual resolution required for discriminating the grating ranges from 96 min of arc (0.01) to 3 min of arc (0.33) in one‐octave steps; at a testing distance of 114 cm the required resolution ranges from 48 min (0.02) to 1.5 min (0.67). Using this system, we evaluated the visual acuity of normal infants and young children. Their ability to discriminate the finer gratings improved with increasing age, and more than 90% of the normal subjects in the 36‐month group tested at 0.67. We also examined young children with known ocular pathologies and compared the results with acuity measurements obtained with the preferential looking test. The latter method gave acuities slightly better than those from the Grating Disc system, but the finding with the two techniques were generally in good agreement. AbstractMorphological changes and lens position were examined in 51 eyes of 51 patients 25 to 37 (mean 31) months after extracapsular cataract extraction with implantation of a posterior chamber lens in the ciliary sulcus. Ocular morphology was compared to a previously published examination of the same eyes performed 4 months after surgery. The anterior chamber depth, lens position and the position of the posterior lens capsule had remained unchanged. ‘Iris bulging’, i.e. a gonioscopically visible slight impression of the iris overlying the lens haptics, had increased from 0 to 42%, iridal transillumination defects from 34 to 46%, and pigment dispersion in the chamber angle from 46 to 72%. Twenty‐four percent of the eyes had developed significant, capsulotomy‐requiring opacification of the posterior lens capsule. We draw the following conclusions: The posterior chamber lens and the posterior lens capsule have reached their permanent positions by the fourth postoperative month. AbstractForty‐eight eyes enucleated after a perforating eye injury (PEI) in 1980–86 (15% of all PEIs) were examined. The time between injury and enucleation varied from 0 to 1145 days. The lens had been damaged or lost in all eyes and 94% had an uveal tract injury. In 83% the retina was detached, in 15% it was totally prolapsed in injury. The inflammatory signs were most marked in eyes with a corneoscleral or double perforation. Proliferation of the retinal pigment epithelial cells or fibrous proliferation from the wound or ciliary body was found 9–10 days after trauma and epiretinal membranes from the optic nerve head or from the surface of the retina after 1 month. AbstractThe urinary excretion of albumin (a marker of glomerular damage) and retinol binding protein (a low molecular weight protein marker of tubular dysfunction) was determined by sensitive immunochemical methods in 110 insulin‐dependent (Type I) diabetic patients. We observed a statistically significant correlation between the urinary excretion levels of both proteins, in particular albumin, and the degree of retinopathy. The incidence of macroalbuminuria and tubular proteinuria was significantly higher in patients with manifest background retinopathy and proliferative retinopathy as compared to patients with no or slight retinopathy. AbstractThe influence of diabetic dysregulation on refraction was analysed by a short‐term and a long‐term approach, a) Out of 15 patients admitted due to high blood sugars and followed over weeks, 11 showed refractive fluctuation of 1–6.5 D, in either direction — often with excess hypermetropia, while 4 appeared refractively stable. In those with refractive change a transient increase of lens thickness was suggested from ultrasound measurements, b) Diabetes control was evaluated retrospectively in 74 adult diabetics, mainly based on repeated 24 h urine glucose determinations over a 6‐year period. As a group, those with low myopia did not score worse than those who had stayed emmetropic. AbstractThe present study is an evaluation of the possibility of using conjunctival biopsies for establishing the diagnosis of systemic amyloidosis of neuropathic type. Amyloid deposits were demonstrated in conjunctival biopsies from 15 of 16 patients with polyneuropathy and from 1 of 4 patients with vitreous opacities as the only symptom. Thus the sensitivity of conjunctival biopsies for the diagnosis of systemic amyloidosis of this type is similar to that of biopsies from other tissues. It is concluded that a conjunctival biopsy is a useful diagnostic tool since the technique is simple and there is little discomfort for the patient.

AbstractAn epidemiological and genetic study in Denmark of granular corneal dystrophy Groenouw type I is described. Ninety‐one living patients were found. The disease is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait with a 100% penetrance of the gene. The 91 cases could be traced back to 6 different mutations.
