AbstractThe enantiomer composition of terpene alcohol pheromones produced by host selecting males of 4 AmericanIpsspp. was determined as (S)‐(‐)‐ipsenol (>99% [S]‐[‐]) inI. grandicollis, as (S)‐(+)‐ipsdienol (90% [S]‐[+]) inI. avulsus, as an enantiomer mixture of 77% (R)‐(‐)‐ and 23% (S)‐(+)‐ipsdienol inI. calligraphus calligraphusand as (S)‐(+)‐ipsdienol (>99% [S]‐[+]) and (S)‐(‐)‐ipsenol (99% [S]‐[‐]) inI. paraconfusus.Field experiments were carried out to investigate the beetles' response to baits containing different concentrations of commercial (±)‐ipsdienol and (±)‐ipsenol, respectively. The tests revealed the following response pattern: a)I. c. calligraphuscatch numbers increased with (±)‐ipsdienol concentrations but were reduced by (±)‐ipsenol; b) in contrast,I. grandicollisresponse was reduced by (±)‐ipsdienol but enhanced by (±)‐ipsenol; c)I. avulsuscatch numbers increased with concentrations of racemates of both terpene alcohols; d)I. paraconfususbarely responded to traps baited with the synthetic racemates. AbstractThe pine weevilHylobius abietis(L.) is known to oviposit in the inner bark of roots of recently killed coniferous trees, where larvae develop as subcortical feeders. In laboratory experiments we demonstrated that manyH. abietislarvae abandoned a crowded host substrate and migrated through sand to a previously unoccupied substrate 100 mm away, where they established themselves. Ethanol and the host monoterpene α‐pinene were shown to act synergisticafly in attracting the larvae. Larval migration towards fresh host material was demonstrated also in first instar larvae hatching from eggs laid in sand more than 50 mm away from the host substrate. Oviposition in the sand was induced by denying the ovipositing females access to the host material by covering it with nylon mesh. We suggest that the facultative migratory behaviour shown byH. abietislarvae in the two situations reported here can play an important role in increasing their survival as well as their ability to utilize available host material in the field.ZusammenfassungGeruchsorientierte Wanderung durch den Boden von in Wurzelstöcken lebenden Hylobius abietis (L.)‐Larven (Col., Curculionidae)Vom Großen Braunen Rüsselkäfer,Hylobius abietisist es bekannt, daß er seine Eier unter die Rinde von Wurzelstöcken frisch gefällter Kiefern ablegt, wo die Larven sich im Bast entwickeln. In Labor‐experimenten konnten wir nachweisen, daß vieleH. abietis‐Larven ein dicht besiedeltes Wirtssubstrat aufgeben und durch den Sandboden zu einem noch freien Substrat in etwa 10 cm Entfernung wandern und sich dort einbohren. Äthanol und das im Wirtsholz vorhandene Monoterpen α‐Pinen wurden als Substanzen nachgewiesen, die synergistisch anziehend auf die Larven wirken. Die Larvenwanderung zu frischem Wirtssubstrat wurde auch bei frisch geschlüpften Larven beobachtet, die 5 cm vom Wirtsholz entfernt im Sandboden aus dort abgelegten Eiern schlüpften. Die Eiablage in den Sandboden wurde dadurch induziert, daß ablegebereite Weibchen nicht am natürlichen Brutmaterial ablegen konnten, weil dieses mit Nylonnetzen abgedeckt war. Aus den Ergebnissen wird gefolgert, daß die fakultative Wanderung vonH. abietis‐Larven in den zwei gegebenen Situationen zur Verbesserung der Überlebenschancen und zur Verbesserung der Ausnutzung des verfügbaren Wirtssubstrats eine

AbstractMaladera matridaArgaman (Col., Scarabaeidae), which was known to damage home gardens and ornamentals in the Tel Aviv area, spread southward and established itself in the Negev. It became a pest of agricultural crops, causing heavy damage to sweet potatoes and groundnuts, on which the grubs feed in the soil. Catches of beetles in black light traps during the years 1989–1991 indicated two peaks of flight, representing two annual flight periods: in May‐June and in August‐September. The proportion of males in the population was usually approximately 45%, but early in spring males predominated. The number of ovipositing females was low at the beginning of each flight period, but at the peak of adult activity about half the females were ovipositing.ZusammenfassungEin Beitrag zur Phänologie von Maladera matrida Arg. AbstractArthropod predators of the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisumHarr.) were collected using pitfall traps in peas (Pisum sativumL.), clover (Trifolium pratenseL.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativaL.). Aphid densities were monitored using a vacuum suction sampler. Gut dissections were performed onCoccinella 7‐punctataL.,Pterostichus melanariusIll.,P. cupreusL. andBembidion lamprosHbst. to see if they had eaten pea aphids. When aphid numbers were high, 50–80% ofC. 7‐punctatahad eaten pea aphids. Few of the carahuds ate pea aphids in the field. There was no correlation between numbers of predators caught and numbers of aphids at peak in any system. Carabids were more common in peas while spiders and staphylinids were more common in clover and alfalfa. Colder weather in 1991 affected both aphid and predator abundance. The importance of synchrony in time and space for the predator‐prey relationship are discussed.ZusammenfassungRäuberische Arthropoden der Erbsenblattlaus, Acyrthosiphon pisum Harr. Carabiden traten in Erbsenfelder häufiger auf, während Spinnen und Staphyliniden in Klee und Luzerne häufiger waren. AbstractHymenopterous parasites and hyperparasites of Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) (Hom., Aphididae) on sorghum, in the Drôme, FranceFor 6 years, the abundance and efficacy of parasites of the greenbug,Schizaphis graminum(Rond.), were studied in sorghum fields in the Drôme Department, south‐eastern France. The 10 species of primary parasites recorded includedAphidius erviHal.,A. matricariaeHal.,A. picipesNees,A. rhopalosiphide S. P.,A. uzbekistanicusLuzh.,Ephedrus plagiator(Nees),Praon gallicumStary andP. volucreHal. (Aphidiidae);Aphelinus asychisWalk, andA. varipesFoerst. (Aphelinidae). The most common parasites belonged to the generaPraonandAphelinus, but they rarely had a determinating impact on the limitation of populations ofS. graminum. Ten species of hyperparasistes in the families Encyrtidae, Charipidae, Megaspilidae and Pteromalidae greatly reduced the efficacy of the primary parasites. Among the 14 different species of primary parasites (over 39 000 mummified cereal aphids) shipped from France to the United States in the frame of a biological control program againstS. graminum, onlyA. asychisandA. varipesseem to have been established. AbstractThe biology of the sciarid parasitoidSynacrasp. was studied. The species has, in recent years, been found in several Swedish greenhouses. The species oviposits and develops in larvae ofBradysia pauperabut not inLycoriella solani. The mean developmental time was 25.4 days at 23 °C and 44.8 days at 17°C. Females produced an average of 272 viable offspring at 23°C and 290 at 17°C. The potential maximum rate of population increase was higher than that for its host at 23 °C. The possibilities for the parasitoids use as a biological control agent against sciarids is discussed.ZusammenfassungZur Biologie von Synacra sp. AbstractIn many glasshouse ornamental crops, daylength is controlled in order to regulate plant growth. To investigate whether short daylength influences the bionomics ofFrankliniella occidentalis(Pergande), life table parameters ofF. occidentalisreared on bean leaves at 25°C and photoperiods of 4:20, 8:16 or 16:8 (L:D) h were calculated. The immature developmental time significantly increased with decreasing daylength from 13.15 to 14.75 days at 16:8 and 4:20 (L:D) h photoperiod, respectively. The effect was expressed primarily in second larval instars. The immature mortality increased with decreasing daylength from 67.3% to 87.5% at photoperiods of 16:8 and 4:20 (L:D) h, respectively. Female adult longevity was significantly longest with 13.3 days at 4:20 (L:D) photoperiod. However, mean preoviposition period and fertility did not differ among different daylengths. Life table parameters differed between photoperiods of 16:8; 8:16 and 4:20 (L:D) as follows: Net reproductive rate (Ro) = 12.2; 7.6 and 3.7 (generation1); intrinsic rate of increase (rm) = 0.14; 0.11 and 0.06 (day−1); mean generation time (T) = 17.9; 18.3 and 21.1 (days), and doubling time (DT) = 5.0; 6.3 and 11.2 (days), respectively. This study shows that short daylength at 25 °C reduces reproductive fitness ofF. occidentalisbut does not induce reproductive diapause in this species.ZusammenfassungEffekt der Photoperiode auf die Bionomie von Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera, Thripidae)In vielen Treibhäusern wird die Tageslänge geregelt, um das Pflanzenwachstum zu regulieren. AbstractThe production of alatae and nuptial flight of hill‐building wood‐ants of theFormica rufa‐group were studied from April to August 1992 on 1700 ha of forest near Freiburg. Winged ants were found in 28.7 % of the 331 nests examined (F. polyctena27 %,F. rufa27 %, F. lugubris 37 %,F. pratensis48 %,F. truncorum0 %). The likelihood of finding alatae rose with nest height and circumference; previous damage of the nest mound showed no negative effects. Of the alatae‐nests, 26 % produced ♂♂ only; 38 % ♂♂ + ♀♀; 36 % ♀♀ only. The pure ♀♀‐nests were found inF. polyctenaandF. rufabut not in the other species. The production of sexuals lasted 2.5 weeks inF. rufa, 3.7 weeks inF. polyctena, 4.3 weeks inF. lugubris, and 6.3 weeks inF. pratensis.Nests producing sexuals were predominantly found at lower altitudes, the first appearance of alatae was delayed by 1–4 weeks per 100 m increase in altitude. An exception occurred in some nests above 800 m probably due to the temperature inversion. Nuptial flight was recorded on 20 days; and on 5 of these days more than one ant species was swarming.ZusammenfassungEinfluβ von Wetter und Standort auf das Schwärmverhalten hügelbauender Waldameisen der Formica rufa‐Gruppe (Hym., Formicidae)Die Produktion von Geschlechtstieren und das Schwärmverhalten hügelbauender Waldameisen wurde von April bis August 1992 auf einer Waldfläche von 1700 ha Wald bei Freiburg/Br. untersucht. AbstractIt was established thatParthenolecaniumcorni (Bouché),Quadraspidiotus perniciosus(Comst.), andDysaphis plantaginea(Pass.), had stable infestation patterns in the orchard over time. Other species had a stable distribution during part of the year and a random re‐distribution at other times [Eriosoma lanigerum(Haus.),Aphidoletessp.]. Other arthropods (Aphissp., spiders,Coccinella septempunctataL.) had a random distribution pattern over time. The distribution pattern of insect species was determined variously by surrounding habitat (P. corni; Q. perniciosus; D. plantaginea), or by host plant susceptibility (E. lanigerum; Aphisspp.) which, in part, was a result of different size trees. We were able to detect the arrival of colonizing populations from outside the orchard using analysis of spatial distribution. The distribution pattern of predators was not always determined by the distribution of apple pests, but by alternate prey on weeds or in surrounding vegetation. For a better understanding of spatial distribution of insects in orchards it was necessary to combine several analysis techniques such as graphical methods, analysis of variance, correlation analysis, and chi‐square; each method providing different types of information. The knowledge of aggregated distribution of pests can help to reduce the amount of pesticides using local treatments, saving with it natural enemies and increasing the possibilities of ecological plant protection.ZusammenfassungÜber die räumliche Verteilung einiger schädlicher Homopteren und nützlicher Insekten in einer Apfelplantage und ihre Bedeutung im ökologischen PflanzenschutzDie Untersuchungen in einer ungespritzten amerikanischen Apfelplantage zeigten, daβParthenolecanium corni(Bouché),Quadraspidiotus perniciosus(Comst.) undDysaphis plantaginea(Pass.) zeitlich stabile Befallsmuster aufwiesen. Andere Arten Arten zeigten stabile Verteilung nur zu einer bestimmten Jahreszeit und darüberhinaus eine instabile Zufallsverteilung (Eriosoma lanigerum(Haus.),Aphidoletessp.). Weitere Arthropoden (Aphisspp., Spinnen,Coccinella septempunctataL.) lieβen nur zeitliche Zufallsverteilungen erkennen. Das Verteilungsmuster der Insektenarten wurde in verschiedener Weise von Umweltfaktoren bestimmt (P. corni, Q. perniciosus, D. plantaginea) oder von der Empfindlichkeit der Wirtspflanze, die vor allem vom Baumalter abhing (E. lanigerum, Aphisspp.). Mit Hilfe der Analyse der räumlichen Verteilung konnte der Beginn der Kolonisierung bestimmt werden. Das Verteilungsmuster von Predatoren hing nicht immer von der Verteilung der Apfelschädlinge ab, sondern wurde auch von den Beutetieren auf der umgebenden Vegetation bestimmt. Zum besseren Verständnis der räumlichen Verteilung der Insekten in der Apfelplantage war es notwendig, verschiedene Analyse‐Techniken wie grafische Methoden sowie Varianz‐, Korrelations‐ und x2‐Analyse zu kombinieren. Jede Methode führte zu eigenen Informationen.
