AbstractThe effects of the release of phytoseiid mitesAmblyseius aberrâns(Oud.),Typhlodromus pyriScheuten andAmblyseius andersoni(Chant) on spider mite populations in northern Italian vineyards are here reported. In the first experiment phytoseiids have been released in single or mixed populations, using approximately 100 overwintering females per plant, in two vineyards seriously infested byPanonychus ulmi(Koch) andEotetranychus carpini(Oud.).In the second experiment the relationships betweenA. aberransand the spider mite populations have been investigated considering the influence of different densities of release (50, 100 and 150 overwintering females per plant). The dispersal ofA. aberranshas been studied in detail in this environment. The release ofA. aberransproved to give successful results in both experiments where the predators were able to keep the spider mite densities at low levels. Moreover,A. aberranswas observed as dominant species in plots receiving releases of mixed populations of phytoseiids. Satisfactory results in the control of tetranychids were obtained in the first experiment usingT. pyriwhile the releases ofA. andersoniwere not successful in controlling this. Some factors involved in the success of winter release ofA. aberransandT. pyrihave been discussed.Despite its failure in the release the role ofA. andersoniin vineyards can be considered of some importance since it frequently colonizes naturally from wild plants. RegardingA. aberransthe experiments confirm the low displacement capacity of this species. Further studies are needed forT. pyriconsidering its ability to disperse in the environment. The influence of anthocorids on phytophagous and predacious mites constitutes the last subject of this investigation. The important role ofOrius vicinus(Rib.) in controllingP. ulmiandE. carpinipopulations in vineyards has been confirmed. The predation ofO. vicinuson phytoseiids has frequently been observed but the action of anthocorids has not at all compromised the survival ofA. aberransandT. pyriand the result of their release.

AbstractOn some parasitic Hymenoptera attacking the cereal leaf beetle Oulema lichenis (Voet) (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) in southern BavariaThe parasitic Hymenoptera (= parasitoids) emerging from the pupal cells ofOulema licheniswere studied at several places in the surroundings of Munich, Bavaria. These species are briefly characterized and their biology is described. The by far most important parasite is the EulophidNecremnus leucarthros(Nees) which eliminates almost half of the host's population. Most of the parasites have more than one generation in the year. The importance of parasitation for the cereal leaf beetle is highly dependent on the surrounding biocenosis, especially on the availability of alternative hosts for the parasites.

AbstractThe ground beetle and weevil communities on thirty grassland sites differing in intensity of management were sampled using pitfall traps in north‐east England. The beetle communities were analysed using classification (TWINSPAN) and ordination (DECORANA) and, together with measured environmental variables, canonical correlation analysis (CANOCO). Classification and ordination of the ground beetle data indicated that management was the most important factor affecting the communities; the weevil data gave similar but less clear results. The results of the CANOCO analyses were less readily interpretable than those of the DECORANA ordination where the measured environmental variables were considered separately.

AbstractThe pheromone system of the elm bark beetle Pteleobius vittatus (F.) (Col., Scolytidae)The elm bark beetlePteleobius vittatus(F.) releases 2‐methyl‐3‐buten‐2‐ol as a main volatile besides equal amounts ofcis‐2‐(1‐hydroxy‐1‐methylethyl)‐5‐methyltetrahydrofuran (cis‐pityol) andcis‐3‐hydroxy‐2,2,6‐trimethyltetrahydropyran (as‐vittatol). The vinylcarbinol was previously known as an aggregation pheromone of conifer infesting scolytids;cis‐pityol is a new constituent of Coleoptera, cis‐vittatol a new insect volatile. Structural connections of these compounds and their possible biogenetic relationships are discussed. During field tests, the combination of all three compounds proved to be particularly attractive and was by far superior to single compounds or two‐component mixtures. Using optically activecis‐vittatol, the combination containing the (–)‐enantiomer attracted by far the mostP. vittatus.Only this bait also attracted the bark beetle predatorNemosoma elongatum(L.).ZusammenfassungDer Bunte UlmenbastkäferPteleobius vittatus(F.) produziert als Dreikomponenten‐Pheromon hauptsächlich 2‐Methyl‐3‐buten‐2‐ol, daneben zu je etwa gleichen Teilencis‐2‐(1‐Hydroxy‐1‐methylethyl)‐5‐methyltetrahydrofuran (cis‐Pityol) undcis‐3‐Hydroxy‐2,2,6‐trimethyltetrahydropyran (cis‐Vittatol).

AbstractWhen added to artificial diets, the sesquiterpene lactone bakkenolide‐A deterred feeding of neonate variegated cutworms in a choice test, and inhibited larval growth in a no‐choice bioassay. In both bioassays, bakkenolide‐A was more active against this polyphagous pest than several other sesquiterpene lactones previously shown to be active against other insects. In the choice test, older larvae (second instar) were found to be less sensitive to the antifeedant effect of bakkenolide‐A than were younger ones (first instar). Bakkenolide‐A also reduced larval growth and survival of second instar larvae when applied topically. Bioactivity of bakkenolide‐A via topical application was also greater than that of other sesquiterpene lactones tested.

AbstractStudies were carried out on the biology and ecology ofPterochloroides persicae(Cholodk.), under field conditions on peach trees in Shebin El‐Kom, Egypt. The aphid developed through 18 overlapping parthenogenetic generations (anholocyclic species) throughout the whole year. The reproductive, pre‐ and post‐reproductive periods, fecundity and longevity were determined. There were two annual peaks in the proportion of alatae viviparae in the population, the major one at the end of April and May, and the another one at the end of October. However, these alatae spread the infestation.
