AbstractSanionia orthothecioides(Lindb.) Loeske(Drepanocladus orthothecioides(Lindb.) Roth) is reported from three Scottish islands, Hirta (St Kilda), Mainland of Shetland and Fair Isle, new to the British Isles. It is described and illustrated and the differences with the closely relatedS. uncinata(Hedw.) Loeske discussed.

Hedenäs,comb. nov.andT. fernandesiiC. Sérgio.T. fernandesiiis only known from Madeira; the other two also occur on the Canary Islands and the Azores.Thamnobryum canariense(Ren.&Card.) Long is transferred toIsothecium,asI. atlanticumHedenäs,comb. et nom. nov.

AbstractRiccia atlanticaSérgio&Perold,sp. nov., described from Madeira, is a diminutive species with conspicuous and enlarged epithelial cells, which give a crystalline and shiny appearance when fresh. It is also distinguished by the inconspicuous hyaline scales, the absence of cilia and the spore ornamentation, areolae on the distal face have indistinct walls, the unperforated marginal angles, the triradiate mark on the proximal face being almost imperceptible, and the inconspicuous wing.

AbstractThe occurrence of fifteen xeromorphic adaptations in mosses of gypsiferous sites in south-east Spain, the most arid part of Europe, was analysed. The characteristic species of agypsophilous moss community(Crossidium crassinerve, Tortula revolvensandAloina bifrons) were evaluatedin order to compare their degree of adaptation to the habitat with the degree of adaptation of other groups of species of this association.

AbstractThe pattern of cell division inSphagnumleaflets is reviewed. The review is supplemented by data on additional cell divisions, symmetry, and the pattern of chloroplast reproduction. The results are compared with Neuburg's (1960) results aboutProtosphagnum nervatumfrom the Upper Permian. The regular shift of the spindle orientation between subsequent mitoses (exceptions occur), the temporal pattern of asymmetrical and symmetrical cell divisions, and the handedness of cell triads are described and discussed. The pattern could hardly be more regular. Additional cell divisions modify the pattern but do not really change it.
