摘要:
AbstractTelaranea longiiis described as a new species. It differs fromT. tetradactylain its less terete shoots with obliquely inserted lateral leaves, and the cilia on the perianth mouth terminating in a rounded cell. The branch leaves are less spreading than inT. murphyaeand the shoots are less Lepidozioid, often overlapping and orientated in the same direction forming smoother mats than inT. murphyae. Male plants are unknown inT. longiiand female plants are unknown inT. murphyae. FemaleTelaraneaplants from Surrey, which were erroneously determined asT. murphyae, are shown to be referable toT. longii. Both species are associated with gardens and may have been imported accidentally from unknown countries of origin.

摘要:
AbstractEnigmella thallina, a new genus of hepatic, is described. This thallose plant, found in Australia, is believed to be a leafy liverwort with extremely reduced leaves and is similar to broadened forms ofLethocolea pansa. On this basis, and because of the similarity in marsupium structure,Enigmella thallinais placed in the Acrobolbaceae.

摘要:
AbstractRecent field work in Mexico reveals fifteen cleistocarpic moss species in the Neovolcanic Belt, several of which represent new state records for Hidalgo, Michoacán, Puebla or Tlaxcala. The distribution of these species suggests that they have been able to cross the Neovolcanic Belt, but their method of dispersal remains obscure. Local dispersal may be enhanced by forest disturbance, agriculture, grazing and/or by their ability to shed the capsules with ease.

摘要:
AbstractLamella margins ofPolytriehadelphusfrom throughout the range of the genus have been examined by SEM. All specimens clearly referable on other characters to the genus have characteristically crenate lamella margins covered with angular flakes of epicuticular wax. In this respect they resemble species ofDawsoniabut differ from all other Polytrichaceae examined. The lamella margin characters are useful for critical identification of non-fruiting plants ofPolytriehadelphusfrom other vegetatively similar Polytrichaceae. They confirm thatP. erieoidesand the North AmericanP. lyalliiMitt. do not belong to this genus.Polytriehadelphushas a trans-Pacific and essentially Southern Hemisphere distribution extending from Sulawesi and New Guinea through New Zealand and the Fuegian region to the northern Andes, with a north-western outpost in Costa Rica. It is likely that this distribution is derived from a continuous Antarctic range in the late Cretaceous, and that much of the radiation of the genus at the two northern ends of its present range took place in the mid to late Tertiary. Outlying stations on Tristan da Cunha and the Marquesas probably result from long-distance dispersal.

摘要:
AbstractMosses exhibit a greater variety of cellular separation mechanisms than any other group of land plants. Diaspore liberation mechanisms range from (1) the random breakage of thin-walled stalk cells to (2) the formation of new internal walls that separate from the old walls, (3) severance along the middle lamella of the basal cell with or without the rounding off of the cells, (4) the formation of highly specialized abscission or tmema cells and (5) breakage along an intercalary region of thinwalled living cells. Rhizoidal gemmae are the only propagules lacking a separation mechanism other than by the decay of the filament system that produces them. In some species, two and sometimes three different kinds of diaspore are formed simultaneously in culture. Diaspore germination patterns in mosses are even more diverse than the liberation mechanisms. With a few exceptions new growth from diaspores is filamentous. Most diaspares are highly polarized and the germination pattern is fixed during development. Protonemal and rhizoidal gemmae are defined on the basis of the filament systems that produce them and from the presence or absence of specialized abscission mechanisms.

摘要:
AbstractDaily counts were made of spores trapped on microscope slides coated with petroleum jelly and placed on the ground at distances up to 200 em from isolated colonies ofAtrichum undulatumandBryum argenteum. The observations continued for 30–34 days during the annual period of spore release in these species. Estimates of the number of spores released by the colonies were obtained as the product of the numbers of capsules and the difference between the mean numbers of spores present in undehisced capsules at the beginning of the experiment and remaining in dehisced capsules at the end.Spore deposition over the experimental periods showed a steep gradient, deposition per unit area falling from 4740—14, 230 spores cm−2in the centre of the colonies to less than 10 spores cm−2200 cm from the edge of the colonies. Despite the steep deposition gradients, however, it was estimated that more than 85% of the spores inA. undulatum, and more than 95% of those inB. argenteum, were dispersed to unknown distances beyond the trapping areas.
