AbstractIn spite of the absence of a peristome inSchistostega,developmental studies show that the internal structure of the capsule has considerable similarity and presents no strong barriers to a relationship withMittenia.This is strongly supported by the protonema and many features of the gametophore and sporophyte. Therefore it is suggested that the Mitteniaceae be transferred from the Bryales to the Schistostegales.

AbstractAtrichum undulatum(Hedw.) Beauv.,Physcomitrium pyriforme(Hedw.) Hampe,Cyclodictyon blumeanum(C. Muell.) O. Kuntze andTristichella spiculiferaDix., representing four genera of mosses new to Peninsular Malaysia, are reported and the latter two species described and illustrated. Features of ecological and distributional interest are also discussed. The sporophytes ofTristichella spiculiferaare described and figured for the first time.

AbstractChawley Brick Pit, Oxford fell into disuse in 1935 and provided a variety of habitats which Were exceptional for the district, especially on wet sand and clay, in which many locally rare species of bryophyte appeared. By 1948 it had a rich bryophyte flora which was still being added to by new immigrants, many of which must have come from at least 30–60 km distance. Between 1966 and 1985 the development of woodland and the natural evolution of the soil had eliminated most of these early immigrants but some other equally remarkable shade-tolerant species had arrived. About half of the hepatic species must have come as spores, and the other half either as, spores or gemmae. Many of the immigrant mosses are dioecious and fruit rarely but spores, nevertheless, seem the most likely means of introduction for most of them.

AbstractApproximately fifty mosses collected are reported from Rarotonga, the largest island of the Cook Archipelago. A very low level of endemism is apparent and the dominating phytogeographic component is Oceanic with secondary Austral and Indomalayan-Asian elements.

AbstractThe spore wall morphology and first germination stages ofFossombronia caespitiformisare described. The spores are markedly heteropolar and catalept. The boundary line, which separates the proximal and distal faces, is shifted toward the proximal pole. The spore coat breaks along this boundary line allowing the protonemal tube to protrude. The dehiscence pattern can be considered tangential.

AbstractLaboratory experiments have shown that low concentrations of mercury severely inhibit photosynthesis, temporarily increase respiration, reduce chlorophyll a and b concentrations and cause substantial loss of intracellular potassium fromRhytidiadelphus squarrosus.These changes have been interpreted as being due to mercury causing damage to the membrane systems of the cell.
