AbstractThroughout his life, Ruskin was dominated by a passionate love for the natural world, which he saw as being both beautiful and good. Its goodness was shown in the duties which he thought were assigned to its different components - and the duties themselves were frequently of a moral nature. Mosses generally he saw as decorating and preserving stone surfaces; providing colour and holding water for the streams. In the individual leaves he saw qualities of humility and self sacrifice, his curiosity and keen observation serving to unravel not so much scientific truths as moral lessons for mankind.

AbstractTrichostomum bombayenseC.M. is typified andT. cylindrothecaMitt. reduced to synonymy under it. The records ofTrichostomumspecies from Ceylon are critically examined andT. tenuirostre(Hook.&Tayl.) Lindb. removed from the Ceylon moss flora. Records ofT. orthodontum(C.M.) Broth. andT. cuspidatum(D.&M.) D.&M. hitherto published are based on misidentifications, but new records are given of both. Differences betweenT. cuspidatumandT. stenophyllum(Mitt.) Broth., which latter binomial is not a homonym asIndex Muscorumstates, are dealt with and illustrated by S.E.M. photographs.T. stenophyllumis a good species which has been relegated to extraordinary synonymy in the past.

AbstractSome species of Fontinalis produce a calyptra which splits below the point of insertion of adjacent archegonia. Therefore accessory archegonia are incorporated into the aerial calyptra. This is especially evident inF. squamosaand less so in species with few archegonia per perichaetium such asF. dalecarlica.

AbstractSEM analyses of sporoderms ofDicranolejeunea gilva, D. yoshinagana, Schiffneriolejeunea indicaandSpruceanthus semirepandus,are provided for the first time. The results indicate that spore morphology, hitherto not adequately stressed, may have considerable relevance in the taxonomy of the Ptychanthoideae.

AbstractThe growth of transplants of sixSphagnumspecies at a blanket bog site in the southern Pennines was investigated and compared with that of similar transplants of the same provenance at a site in the Berwyn Mountains, North Wales. All species made some growth in the first year at the polluted southern Pennine site, but onlySphagnum recurvumgrew in the second year. All species made good growth in both years at the relatively unpolluted North Wales site. A similar result was obtained in a later transplant experiment, and after more than 3 years,Sphagnum recurvumalone survives of the original transplants in the southern Pennines. The failure of these transplants is discussed in relation to a fumigation experinlent in whichSphagnumspecies were subjected to concentrations of sulphur dioxide in air and sulphate in rain similar to those occurring in the southern Pennines today. It is concluded that current concentrations of sulphur pollutants may not entirely account for the failure of the transplants.

AbstractIn a population ofAtrichum undulatumwithn= 14, gametophytic interphase nuclei included two unequal, but substantial, blocks of heterochromatinsensu lato. Positive C-banding within each was limited to the terminal portion. Only one of these two chromosomes, together with its homologue, entered meiosis with a similarly extensive distribution of heterochromatin. The bivalent involved was metacentric and usually achiasmate in the heterochromatic region, which amounted to almost the whole of one arm. A single proximal chiasma was rare. In addition to this behavioural difference between the two basically haploid sets of seven chromosomes included in what has been regarded as auto diploidA. undulatum, evidence of a morphological distinction is presented. Six pairs were recognizable on morphological grounds but two chromosomes were unique. Meiosis in triploidA. undulatumwithn= 21 also included only a single heterochromatic bivalent.Variation between basically haploid complements is also presented forPhilonotis fontana, in a population of which a dimorphic bivalent was consistently present during meiosis. The dimorphism was related to the presence or absence of a short heterochromatic arm and, hence, of synapsis between telocentric and acrocentric homologues. Sampling to date suggests an association with dioecism.

AbstractAfter screening large numbers of survivors of mutagenic treatment with MNNG, 165 strains of the mossPhyscomitrella patensaltered in stem or leaf development were isolated. Of these, seven strains which produce leaves of greatly reduced size and cell number were analysed genetically, using protoplast fusion to obtain hybrids for dominance and complementation tests, since the strains are sterile. Three of the mutant alleles are recessive to the wild-type allele, but this is not true of the other four. Four of the mutant alleles can be assigned to one complementation group, and two to a second group.
