摘要:
AbstractGlyphomitrium canadense, known only from the type collection, is a synonym ofG. daviesiiand almost certainly British rather than North American in origin. Because of several morphological features of importance, the genus cannot be included in the Erpodiaceae, as recently suggested, and is therefore retained in the Ptychomitriaceae.

摘要:
AbstractAn examination of eighty-six samples ofSphagnum subsecundumsensu lato, using principal components analysis, discriminant analysis and cultivation experiments, has shown that the samples fall into two well-defined groups corresponding toS. subsecundumvar.inundatumandS. subsecundumvar.auriculatum.The best characters for separating these include the relative number of pores on the dorsal and ventral surfaces of the stem-leaves, the form of the branches and branch-leaves, and the proportion of the length of the stem-leaf with fibrils in the hyaline cells. The results provide limited evidence in favour of the inclusion ofbavaricumandrufescenswithin var.inundatumand var.auriculatumrespectively. The status ofS. subsecundumvar.subsecundumrequires further study.

摘要:
AbstractAnomodon viticulosuswas subjected to several different patterns of alternating wet and dry periods, and assimilation was measured at intervals over 49 days. Short periods of desiccation intercalated between 6-day moist periods had little effect on subsequent performance. Short moist periods breaking otherwise continuous desiccation had a very pronounced effect in mitigating desiccation damage. The results provide some evidence for a fairly slight, but probably cumulative, specific deleterious effect of drying and remoistening.

摘要:
AbstractAnalyses of populations ofGrimmia donianafrom Old Red Sandstone walls (Brecon Beacons, Breconshire) and vitrified lead slag (Charterhouse, Somerset) showed the former to have a low and the latter a high lead content. Lead in material from the field was shown to be ionically bound to an extracellular site. Uptake of lead from solutions of lead nitrate was by a passive physical process, without penetration of the cytoplasm. No difference in lead uptake capacity was detected between the two populations. The results are discussed in terms of a natural non-specific lead tolerance mechanism occurring inGrimmia doniana.

摘要:
AbstractPeroxisomes are characterized, among plastids and mitochondria, in the photosynthetic lamellae of the leaf ofPolytrichum communegametophytes. The significance of such a functional association in the haploid phase of a Bryophyte is briefly discussed from an evolutionary standpoint.

摘要:
AbstractPart I deals briefly with the application of the Code rules to family and subfamily names. In Part II full references are given for all family and subfamily names of Hepaticopsida, some with nomenclatural or taxonomic notes added. There are three lists, each in alphabetical order: A. legitimate names (78 f., 62 subf.), B. illegitimate names (21 f., 10 subf.), and C. invalid names (only those derived from generic names; 17 f., 11 subf.); in total 116 family and 83 subfamily names. Five family names(ChoneoleaceaeSchust.,ConocephalaceaeK. Müll.,ExormothecaceaeK. Müll.,OxymitraceaeK. Müll.,PerssoniellaceaeSchust.) and three subfamily names(AllisonioideaeSchust.,CololejeuneoideaeHerz.,OdontosehismatoideaeBuch) are validated by Latin diagnosis. Five subfamily names(Hygrobielloideae(Joerg.) Schust.,Isotaehidoideae(Hatch.) Grolle,Makinooideae(Nakai) Grolle,Mastigophoroideae(Nees) Grolle,Pallavicinioideae(Migula) (Grolle) are proposed by change of rank, whereas five other subfamily names(AcromastigoideaeGrolle,BlepharostomatoideaeGrolle,CyathodioideaeGrolle,LethocoleoideaeGrolle,NotothyladoideaeGrolle) are newly proposed.Part III is a taxonomic arrangement of the hepatic families and subfamilies. For each of the five orders of Hepaticopsida the accepted families (sixty-two in total) are listed alphabetically with full synonymy : Anthocerotales (1), Marchantiales (16), Metzgeriales (8), Calobryales (2), Jungermanniales (35). The accepted subfamilies with their synonyms are added to each family.
