摘要:
AbstractComparative studies of North European Isobryalean and Hypnobryalean mosses have shown that axillary rhizoids occur only inMyurella, Platydictya jungermannioides, Orthothecium, Isopterygium muellerianum, I. alpicola, I. pulchellumandHerzogiella. These taxa also share the following features: purple and granular-papillose rhizoids, easily detached branches, rather weak and not plicate perichaetial leaves, whitish-yellow exostomes with borders never distinctly widened at the zone of transition in pattern between the lower and upper part of the outer peristomial layer. In all characters except rhizoid position and, in some species, stem leaf areolation, this group of taxa is very similar to certainPlagiotheciumspecies and toIsopterygium elegans. It seems probable that all these taxa are closely related and should be placed in a single family, the Plagiotheciaceae.

摘要:
AbstractThe unspecialized haplolepideous peristome, short irregularly incrassate, densely pluripapillose upper leaf cells, strong single costae that have well differentiated guide cells, strongly toothed leaves and short-beaked opercula of the genusMesotuspoint to a closer relationship of this genus with the Dicranaceae than to the Dicnemonaceae. On the basis of a series of unusual character states (capsules immersed, calyptrae mitrate, opercula conic, rhizoids arising from laminal leaf cells, and massive, endosporically developed protonemata)Mesotusis placed in its own subfamily (Mesotoideae, subfam. nov.). Within the DicranaceaeMesotusappears closest toSclerodontiumby virtue of its pluripapillose, irregularly incrassate, upper leaf cells and its prominently bordered leaves. The genus consists of a single species (M. celatus) found throughout New Zealand. One collection ofM. celatushas been attributed to an unspecified Australian locality.

摘要:
AbstractThe generic nameSciaromium(Mitt.) Mitt. that was originally used as a sectional epithet inLeskeais synonymous withEchinodiumJulE. madeirenseJur. [=E. spinosum(Mitt.) Jur.] is selected as the lectotype of the genusEchinodium.A historical review of taxonomic and nomenclatural problems inSciaromiumis provided and taxa that had previously been excluded from this genus are briefly discussed.Sciaromium flavidulumDusén is aEurhynchiumand the combinationE. flavidulum(Dusén) Ochyra is made.Sciaromiumsect.AlomaDusén is synonymous withEurhynchiumsinceE. flavidulumserves as the type species of this section. The taxonomic position ofS. gracileDusén is discussed and this species is considered synonymous withAmblystegium chilenseLor., which is transferred toPseudoleskeaand the appropriate new combinationP. chilensis(Lor.) Ochyra made. Type specimens ofS. belliiBroth.,S. elimbatumBroth.&Watts andS. forsythiiBroth. in Broth.&Watts are briefly described and illustrated; these species are reduced to synonymy with the polymorphicCratoneuropsis relaxa(Hook. f.&Wils.) Fleisch. in Broth.

摘要:
AbstractThe history and nomenclatural problems of the nameLimbellaare reviewed, the correct citation of the generic name beingLimbella(C. Muell.) Broth. The genus consists of two species,L. tricostata(Sull.) Broth. andL. fryei(R. S. Williams) Ochyra which are described.L. tricostatais endemic to the Hawaiian Islands andL. fryeito Oregon on the Pacific coast of North America. Sporophytes are recorded for the first time inL. tricostata. The family relationships ofLimbellaare discussed and it is placed in the Thamnobryaceae, close toThamnobryum.

AbstractCalymperes couguiense Besch., C. porrectum Mitt., C. strictifolium(Mitt.)Roth., Syrrhopodon albovaginatus Schwaegr.,andS. aristifoliusMitt. are reported for the first time from Australia, based on collections of the junior author from northern Queensland. Keys to the species ofCalymperes, SyrrhopodonandMitthyridiumnow known to occur in Australia are provided.
