AbstractFrans Verdoorn was born at Amsterdam in 1906. When young his main biological interest was in the taxonomy ofHepaticae; later it was in the history of biology. His active career as a bryologist began about 1926 when he was a schoolboy and ended about 1939. In 1940 he moved to the United States and returned to Holland in 1957 to become Director of the Biohistorical Institute at the University of Utrecht. He had a very important influence on the revival of bryology immediately before and after the Second World War. This was mainly through his work as editor of theManual of Bryology(1932) and other publications. A bibliography of Verdoorn's bryological works is included.

AbstractDiploid monoeciousPellia(n= 18) in Britain coincides cytologically with material from Belgium, Poland and the U.S.S.R. Each of its chromosomes is identified by Giemsa C-banding as unique and differs from those of haploid species. Despite resemblingP. epiphylla(L.) Corda (n= 9) in gametophytic and sporophytic characters, the haploid and diploid karyotypes remain distinct throughout overlapping geographical distributions and show no cytological evidence of gene exchange. They justify specific recognition which, in the absence of discontinuity of morphological variation, requires the provision of an infallible means of discrimination. A straightforward cytological procedure is supplied for the purpose andP. borealisLorbeer is described as new to Britain.

AbstractMinute ovoid monolete spores and thick - walled pseudoelaters are the main characters for consideringAnthoceros dussiiSteph. the type species of the new genusLeiosporocerosHässel and the new family Leiosporocerotaceae Hässel of the Anthocerotopsida.Anthoceros rigidusLehm. ex Gott.,Anthoceros leiosporusGott.,Aspiromitus dussii(Steph.) Steph.,Aspiromitus leiosporusGott. ex Steph., andPhaeoceros(Aspiromitus)dussii(Steph.) S. Arnell, are synonyms. Latin and English descriptions are given, SEM micrographs of spores and pseudoelaters. The genus thrives in the Antilles.

AbstractA new pleurocarpous moss genus and species,Ochyraea tatrensisVáňa, known only from a single collection from the NízkéTatry Mts (Czechoslovakia) is described and figured. This genus is placed in the recently described family Hypnobartlettiaceae.

AbstractA study was made of morphological variation inRhynchostegium riparioidesfrom 105 sites in 71 different streams and rivers; 15 gametophyte characters were scored for each population. Nineteen water–chemistry variables were also measured at each site. Variation was observed in the size and robustness of the plants, dimensions and shape of the leaves, the degree of denticulation and relative length of the nerve. Cluster analysis revealed broad morphological groups, with low internal similarity. These results do not support the recognition of subspecific taxa. Correlations with environmental variables showed that plants were significantly less robust, smaller-leaved and with weaker denticulation when collected from nutrient-rich water. In view of the wide morphological range shown by this species and its importance for monitoring heavy metals, a comparison with other widespread aquatic mosses is given.
