AbstractThe surface patterning of the cell walls of specimens ofLophocolea bidentata(L.) Dum. andL. cuspidata(Ness) Limpr. was studied with the scanning electron microscope. No evidence was found for a mosaic patterning of the wall surface, previously thought to be diagnostic forL. cuspidata.

AbstractMarchantia polymorphaL. is lectotypified by means of a Dillenian illustration. Three subspecies are described, subsp.polymorpha, subsp.ruderalis, and subsp.montivagans, based on morphological, ecological and electrophoretic characters. These subspecies correspond roughly to the three previously recognized subdivisions of the species.

AbstractTwo newRicciaspecies,R. somaliensisandR. erubescensfrom Africa are described and illustrated. They are both classified in the subgenusRiccia, sectionRiccia. R. somaliensishas hyaline, somewhat frilly scales and apolar, wingless spores;R. erubescenshas shiny dark, purple-red to bright cherry-red scales and polar, winged spores with numerous small areolae; its tissues are sometimes distorted by gelatinous globules that are gradually extruded on the dorsal surface.

AbstractGrimmia curviseta, a new species from Tenerife (Spain, Canary Islands) is characterized by autoecious gametoecia, the upper and perichaetial leaves with long hyaline denticulate hair-point, the leaves unistratose with bistratose margins and the nearly always gymnostomous capsule on an arcuate seta.

AbstractEight epithets ofRigodium (R. araucarietiC. Müll.,R. argentinicumC. Müll.,R. brachypodium(C. Müll.) Par.,R. nano-fasciculatumC. Müll.exThér.,R. pendulumHerz.&Thér.,R. pseudo-thuidiumDus.,R. solutum(Tayl.) Par., andR. tamarixC. Müll), lectotypified here, are listed with their nomenclature and pertinent details involving the careful identification of type specimens and original material. ForRigodium solutum(Tayl.) Par., a specimen from Taylor's original herbarium may likely be the holotype but had not been indicated as such by Taylor, the original author. A conservative approach for this situation is taken here by designating this specimen as a lectotype.
