AbstractAttention is drawn to some of the characters ofRiccia bifurcafrom Cornwall, especially the long-persistent, orange-brown, canaliculate thalli and the small-celled compact tissues, and its differences from other species are discussed. A revision of material shows that all records from elsewhere in the British Isles are erroneous or unsupported by specimens and thus extremely doubtful. Additional studies show thatR. crozalsiiis confined to south and west Britain, several records, including all the Irish ones, being erroneous, and thatR. micheliiandR. ciliatashould be removed from the British List.

AbstractOrthotrichum firmumVent., previously known from East Africa, is reported from the Nilghiri Hills in South India. This supports the Gondwana origin of species with long exserted, smooth capsules within the sectionLeiocarpaMol. Morphological differences in perichaetial leaves betweenO. firmumandO. arborescensThér.&Nav. are reported.

AbstractPhascopsis rubicunda, a new genus in Pottioideae is characterized by: clavate stems branching by repeated sub-terminal innovations; entire, unbordered leaves with strong red costa widening to the base and decurrent in mid-stem leaves; upper leaves often modified to thick-nerved deciduous propagules; capsule sub-globose, immersed, gymnostomous, indehiscent; calyptra broad, conical campanulate, lobed at the base and covering about half the capsule. Dioecious. Rhizoid gemmae on sterile plants. A comparison with other mosses led to the recognition ofTortula rhizophyllain Australia, and some interesting features of the South American mossUleobryum peruvianumwere reported.

AbstractFrom three available portions of the type gathering ofTriehostornum diffieilea lectotype has been chosen. On the basis of comparable habit, leaf morphology, leaf cell morphology, leaf and stem anatomy, peristome, capsule and exothecial cell morphology, and spore characteristics,Ditriehum viride, D. semilunare, D. muelleri, and thenomen nudum D. baileyiare proposed as new synonyms ofD. diffieile.

AbstractThe relationships ofD. calcareumBroth. andD. subbrachycarpum(C. Muell.) Par., toD. brachycarpumHampe, and of this species toD. difficile(Duby) Fleischer andD. rufo-aureum(Hampe) Willis are discussed. On the basis of comparable habit, leaf morphology, leaf cells and sectional anatomy, and similarities of the type descriptions,D. subbrachycarpum, with its synonym D. calcareum, are synonymized withD. brachycarpum.

AbstractAn introduction is given to the tropical moss family Calymperaceae, including a description of its characteristic hyalocyst pores. Keys (for both fertile and non-fertile collections) are provided to the genera, subgenera and sections found in West Tropical Africa. A revision ofCalymperesis given for that region, with a key to the species and subspecies. The peculiarities of the genus (teniole, parateniole, extrateniolar lamina, endohyalocysts, exohyalocysts, leaf polymorphism and foliar gelnmae) have given rise in the past to much confusion and a large synonymy, and the taxonomic implications of these characters are discussed.
