AbstractScopelophila cataractae(Mitt.) Broth., discovered in abundance at its third British site, is highly gemmiferous. The plants attain a height of 5 cm, up to twice that previously known, and morphologically differentiated inner perigonial bracts occur. A gametophytic chromosome number ofn= 13 is discussed in the wider context of the Pottiaceae.

AbstractStatistical analysis of thirty collections of Breutelia inclinata (Hamp.&Lor.) Jaeg. from two disjunct parts of the range, Mexico/Guatemala and Andean South America, reveals that plants from the two areas differ significantly in width of the leafy stems and in leaf length. While the differences are judged insufficient to warrant taxonomic recognition, the greater overall variation in collections from Mexico/Guatemala, compared with those from continental South America, is considered noteworthy. Higher levels of interpopulational variability in essentially non-sexual plants at the northern edge of the range may support a model of evolution that emphasizes local microenvironmental factors as critical rather than Darwiniaa selection forces operating on sexually reproducing populations.

AbstractIn southern SwedenO. linearegrows in two main habitats, coastal pine forests and planted spruce forests. Within this area, the species colonizes the same kinds of substrate as in other climatically similar areas in Europe, viz. rotten wood, tree bases and, to a lesser degree, bare soil. Only a small proportion of the seemingly available substrate (0.2–8.3%) is colonized, a smaller proportion in the pine forests than in the spruce forests. DECORANA and TWINSPAN analyses of sociological data from random squares indicated that the associationOrthodontietum linearis(Barkman) v. Hübschmann is heterogeneous and that its species composition varies considerably with the habitat.O. lineareseems to be competitively inferior compared with the species commonly found in its habitats and it probably survives in the area due to a high dispersal and colonization capacity.

AbstractA fossil ofAntheliafrom late-Pleistocene sediments at Tom Swamp, Massachusetts, consisted of a portion of a plant bearing the characteristic three rows of isomorphic, deeply bifid leaves. The fossilAntheliaindicates the existence of areas of late-lying snow in an essentially treeless, late-Pleistocene landscape. Associated bryophyte (mainly moss) and tracheophyte fossils establish the presence of additional hygric and mesic habitat types.The occurrence ofAntheliaand other leafy liverwort fossils in the basal inorganic sediments at Tom Swamp is unusual. Features of these fossils suggest that the translucent quality of some of the fragments and their small size (1 mm or smaller), which relates to fragmentation during transport, diagenesis and extraction (the breakage resulting from a weak middle lamella between the cells), may be reasons for the rarity of Pleistocene and Holocene fossils of liverworts.Published as contribution number 589 of the New York State Science Service.
