Schimper is a genetically distinct, but morphologically similar, species.S. subsecundumNees subsp.subsecundum, S. subsecundumsubsp.inundatum(Russ.) A. Eddy,stat. nov. andS. auriculatumW.P. Schimp. are described and figured and a key to their identification is given.

AbstractApplication of a Giemsa C-banding technique to the three British species of Pellia indicates that the original description of heterochromatin was largely if not entirely based on constitutive rather than facultative heterochromatin. The technique is shown to have considerable potential in defining liverwort karyotypes more precisely than has hitherto been·possible and to assist in the cytological comparison of species. In this respect, the similarity between specimens ofP. epiphyllaandP. neesianaappears to be greater than the resemblance of either of these species toP. endiviifolia. Chromosome inversion is reported for the first time in bryophytes, inP. neesiana, but there is strong evidence to suggest that structural rearrangement, though not necessarily inversion, has also occurred elsewhere in--this genus.Unequal, almost totally euchromatic sex-specific chromosomes are described for a specimen of BritishRiccardia pinguis. Similarities between the Giemsa C-band patterns of this species andCryptothallus mirabiliswere not as great as might have been expected. Evidence is presented of unusually early duplication of chromatids in the latter.The reaction of these five species to the Giemsa C-banding technique reveals a number of difficulties and a lack of precision associated with the terms H- and h-chromosomes. It is therefore recommended that their use in liverwort cytology should be discontinued.

AbstractA correlation can be seen between the nutrient requirements ofFunaria hygrometricaand conditions in bonfire soil. Excessively high concentrations of nutrients especially ammonium-nitrogen could alone be responsible for the inhibition of growth found on young bonfire soils. For rapid healthy growth ofFunaria, concentrations of calcium, potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus must all be relatively high, although nitrate-nitrogen and phosphorus seem particularly important. The effect of burning and heating on the soil nitrogen cycle and the growth ofFunariaon fertilized soils would repay further investigation.

Abstract(1) The ratio of14CO2uptake of fully expanded capsules to that of corresponding gametophytes in the species studied was about 1 : 15 inMnium hornum,1 : 35 inPleurldium acuminatumand around 1 : 1 inFunaria hygrometriea.(2) Translocation of photosynthate from gametophyte to sporophyte took place within 1 to 4 days of exposure to14CO2; in expanded capsules the final activity was at least equal to that remaining in the gametophyte.(3) InM hornumthere was no evidence of reverse translocation from sporophyte to gametophyte.(4) Translocation from gametophyte continued at a high level throughout the expansion and differentiation of the capsule inM. hornum.The activity reaching the sporophyte was approximately proportional to its fresh weight.(5) Bothin situphotosynthesis and translocation to the capsule ofF. hygrometricarose to a maximum during the latter part of capsule expansion and ensuing differentiation, subsequently declining as the green tissues of the capsule senesced.(6) Fully expanded (but premeiotic) capsules ofM. hornumcontributed approximately 20% of the assiinilate necessary for their growth. The corresponding figure forP. acuminatumwas about 10%, and forF. hygrometricaabout 50%.

AbstractThe blue-grey sheen of dried specimens ofSphagnum subnitensis attributed to thin film interference in the walls of the hyaline cells, this being produced by reflection from upper and lower film surfaces. The reflectance is large in air and small in water, so that the colour is visible only in dried specimens.S. rubellurnlacks the blue-grey sheen because only a small part of the total area of the hyaline cells is thin enough to generate interference colour.
