AbstractPlagiochila britannicais described as a new species. It differs fromP. porelloidesandP. asplenioidesin many characters, especially its often more narrowly oval leaves with a more variable, often truncate to bilobed apex and larger cells, its wider antical stem cells and its diploid chromosome number. Differences fromP. arcticavarintermediainclude its more variable leaf apex, generally more dentate leaves often with longer teeth, the greater maximum size of its leaf cells and its wider antical stem cells. Male and female inflorescences and sporophytes are known inP. britannica, which favours base-rich substrata and has been found in Wales, N. England, Scotland and N. Ireland. A key to the nine species ofPlagiochilain the British Isles is included.

The thalli and sporophytes are usually smaller inA. agrestisthan inA. punctatusand the antheridial bodies are significantly smaller. World distributions and brief descriptions of British habitats are included for both species showing thatA. agrestisis more restricted thanA. punctatusin its distribution and ecology.

AbstractThe morphology of leaves, stems and axillary hairs is compared and described inOxystegus sinuosusandO. tenuirostris. It is suggested thatO. sinuosusfalls within the range of variation ofBarbula ascurrently understood in Britain, but thatO. tenuirostrisis closer toTrichostomum. The morphology of the axillary hairs does not throw much light on its affinities withinBarbula, but a position close toB. cylindricais probably the most appropriate.

AbstractMacrofossils ofC. richardsonii, a moss not found in the living state in Britain, have been identified in mineral inwash deposits from Mainland Bhetland. Associated macrofossils and pollen indicate a Late Devensian origin and correlation of pollen spectra with those of a similar14C-dated site in Shetland suggests a date of around 10,400 B.P.

AbstractRhizoids emerge from only the ventral surface of creeping shoots of most pleurocarpous mosses. This has been shown to be endogenously controlled by the shoots and not due to any external stimulus.

AbstractThe ability of eight mosses to with stand the harsh environment of a coastal sand-dune in Victoria (Australia) has been investigated. It is shown that some species are able to re-vegetate areas which have been disturbed by wind, rabbits and vehicles. Their differing performances in relation to growth, rhizoid strength, and withstanding salt spray and sand burial, equip them for different niches. The ratio of dry weights of gametophore/rhizoids is suggested as an indicator of stage of revegetation.

AbstractDetached fragments of the aquatic mossesFontinalis duriaeiandHygroamblystegium fluviatilecan attach to rocks and tree branches. A period of at least 9 weeks in association with a new rock substrate is required for attachment to occur, under the conditions of the experiment. Following the initiation of attachment there is a great increase in attachment activity resulting in a network of rhizoids; this quickly diminishes after 12–13 weeks. The overall behavior closely parallels the hyperbolic behavior pattern of several species colonizing an artificial new island (Schoener, 1974) and the curve shape appears to be a universal one where the attachment rate can be expressed asY=Ymax- aeb(t−w)where the rate of attachment (b) averages somewhere near−.5, but is influenced by other variables, including substrate type; a is the fraction of moss which will attach between the end of week wand the time of maximum attachment;tis week number; andwis the week of first attachment.
