AbstractIn the fourth quarter of 1996, productivity increased 2.4 percent in the U.S. business sector as output grew 5.8 percent and hours worked rose 3.4 percent. This is among the preliminary productivity data‐as measured by output per hour of all persons‐released by the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics.5.9 percent and hours grew 3.7 percent. For the entire year 1996, the increase in productivity was greater than it had been in the prior three years for both the business and nonfarm business sectors. In the nonfarm business sector, productivity rose 2.2 percent as output increased.Quarter as output increased 3.7 percent and hours of all persons were unchanged. But since the data sources and methods used in preparing the manufacturing statistics differ from those used in preparing the business and nonfarm business series, these measures are not directly comparable. As for manufacturing, productivity grew at a 3.8 percent annual rate in the fourth.
