摘要:
AbstractIncreased competition, and changing customer needs, are challenging the life insurance industry. As sales growth of traditional life insurance declines, customer retention and cost containment become more important. This article presents Prudential's integrated approach to analyzing and improving customer retention. Market research, database analysis, and customer‐level financial analysis are used to understand the drivers of customer attrition, identify the customers who are most likely to leave, and determine the value lost to efficiently allocate and focus retention‐marketing efforts.

摘要:
AbstractAlthough much has been written about how self‐managed teams are much more effective than traditional work groups, almost nothing has been written as towhythey are more effective. As this article explains, the very way a self‐managed team operates leads to greater improvements in quality and speed than are possible in a traditional command‐and‐control structure.

摘要:
AbstractOnly by binding the quality initiative to the strategy and goals of the larger organization can management and its teams ensure that they are doing the right things for the right reasons leading to the best outcomes. This article presents a means of tying quality to strategy for organizations new to quality initiatives and those dissatisfied with previous results. It also outlines a three‐phase implementation structure incorporating a system of checks and balances to ensure that the initiative stays on track.

摘要:
AbstractThe Printed Circuit Layout department at the Lake Stevens Division of the Hewlett‐Packard Company initiated a project to reduce the turnaround time for creating a printed circuit assembly prototype 83 percent in 19 months. This project focused on the business, technical, and people aspects of the required changes. Through a variety of approaches, the division created a process that can deliver a loaded prototype to the engineer within a week of the last engineering design decision made on that board.

摘要:
AbstractAll organizations face the same problem of ensuring that their decision‐making process is as effective as possible. Decision‐making techniques range greatly—from a command‐and‐control hierarchical process to a totally diffused process reflected in self‐directed work teams. How can managers determine whether they are taking the right approach, or doing the right thing? Indeed, does the “right thing” refer to short‐term or long‐term results? In most organizations, there is no real process to explore the impact of decisions over either the short or long term. As this article explains, computer simulation models can be used to enhance an organization's decision‐making process and enable it to “see” the impact of its future choices over both the short and long term.

摘要:
AbstractWhen a parent corporation recasts its vision, what must its member components do to keep up? This case study analyzes an approach for work redesign that substantively changed the way work was done at a 170‐person manufacturing facility. Through this innovative approach, the plant realized significant financial and operational improvements in just four months.

AbstractHow can a nonunion manufacturing plant—plagued with poor customer service and low inventory turns—and a unionized distribution center suffering a host of operating inefficiencies become profitable beyond management's expectations? For the Vermont American Corporation, the answer lay in pairing teamwork with training.

摘要:
AbstractMan or machine: Which is more important? Although the mass‐production systems of the past required the obedience of people to the demands of technology, today's information‐based organizations use technology as a tool for developing expertise. This paradigm shift requires a redefinition of the role of technology and the role of the people who use it, for only through a partnership of capital and skill can organizations achieve the value‐added component of modern work.
