摘要:
AbstractGiven the rapid changes in health care today and the increasingly intense nature of competition among health‐care providers, the success of virtually all health‐care organizations relies increasingly on effective training of personnel, and on the linkage of training approaches and strategies to overall business goals and organizational performance. This article outlines the key steps involved in undertaking a training needs assessment in an institutional health‐care setting, the outcome of which can help institutions align training approaches to support their business goals and institutional needs. ©1999 John Wiley&Sons, Inc.

摘要:
AbstractSelf‐managed teams often fail because their overall organizations—typically traditional command‐and‐control hierarchies—are not designed to support them. In such an environment, underlying assumptions and structures sooner or later work against the teams. Because such organizations are so ingrained in our culture, it is often difficult for them to recognize the fact that they are the problem. Yes, difficult, but, as this article explains, not impossible. ©1999 John Wiley&Sons, Inc.

摘要:
AbstractThe need to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the delivery of educational services has never been more urgent. Computer technology offers a promising strategy for monitoring these performance indicators. At Bowie State University, a part of the University System of Maryland, computer software is being used to chart the progress of its effort to attract and hold on to its minority students majoring in science and mathematics. A “Bowie Matrix” was developed to aggregate several sets of performance indicators into a smaller set and to monitor it over time. This matrix and the steps taken to implement it can be applied to other settings in which performance measurement is crucial. © 1999 John Wiley&Sons, Inc.

摘要:
AbstractAs more companies become pan‐European, taking advantage of potential cost savings and growth opportunities, local management's role becomes increasingly difficult. Being part of a large organization has always had its pros and cons, but to manage change locally and remain pan‐European poses several challenges to local management. © 1999 John Wiley&Sons, Inc.

摘要:
AbstractProduct liability is a legal doctrine that allows a person injured by a defective product to sue anyone in the chain of production. To win the suit, the plaintiff only has to show that the product was “defective” or “unreasonably dangerous.” Given the litigiousness of today's society, product liability lawsuits are common. Therefore, manufacturers and other sellers need to take all possible measures to minimize the possibility of being held liable in a product liability lawsuit. This article discusses how total quality management can be used by manufacturers to minimize, and possibly even eliminate, the risk of being held liable in a product liability lawsuit. © 1999 John Wiley&Sons, Inc.

摘要:
AbstractSupporters of total quality management often argue that the performance appraisal should no longer be used because it inhibits cooperative behavior. Others contend that the appraisal is too hard to implement. This article shows, however, that there are important reasons for retaining the appraisal as a key instrument in managing employee performance. Rather than dismantling their performance assessment systems, most organizations would do well to revamp them to ensure accuracy and fairness. © 1999 John Wiley&Sons, Inc.

摘要:
AbstractKeeping up with internal and external change is a challenge that all organizations face. The only way to succeed in an ever‐evolving environment is to ensure that workers at all levels of the organization have mastered the skills they need to best do their jobs and service the needs of their customers. © 1999 John Wiley&Sons, Inc.

摘要:
AbstractAlthough maintaining a high‐level capacity to share knowledge increases the cost of doing business, investing in knowledge management is widely touted as critical to improving organizational performance in a global business environment. But if organizations neglect to refine their performance measurement systems to consider the impact of knowledge transfer on employees, they will find their investment negated and the benefits of knowledge management vastly diluted. With the proper planning, however, this knowledge management paradox can be avoided. © 1999 John Wiley&Sons, Inc.
