摘要:
AbstractSince its inception, the Saturn Corporation has served as an example of what partnership, teamwork, and principle‐centered leadership can accomplish in an organization that thoroughly understands and tries to apply those concepts. Dedicated to quality and productivity, the company believes that meeting the needs of people—customers, suppliers, team members, retailers, and the community—is the only route to long‐term growth and profitability in a global economy. Its experiences in achieving this goal can light the way for other companies that are struggling with releasing the reins of positional power and transitioning to a team‐oriented environment.

摘要:
AbstractSupply chain management is a hot business topic that has delivered very mixed results. To date, the degree of progress has been limited, by the view that all savings should be kept internal to the organization. As firms continue to pursue supply chain improvement and develop internal excellence, they often overlook the opportunity to use selective partnering with suppliers and customers to develop what is really needed—a network of delivery that brings the demanded products and services to the ultimate consumer in a seamless manner. This article describes a four‐level evolutionary process that can bring a firm the highest potential returns from supply chain management.

摘要:
AbstractDisillusioned with the lack of speed and results of some total quality management programs, many U.S. firms are looking for a better alternative to quality improvement. In 1996, First Chicago NBD implemented Workout, a new approach to continuous improvement and employee involvement. The results were fast and astonishing: In one year, branch staff achieved a 33‐percent increase in customer satisfaction and exceeded sales goals by more than 79 percent over the previous year. This is their story.

摘要:
AbstractOutsourcing of support work is reshaping the organizational landscape of U.S.‐based firms. The rationale for most of this outsourcing has been to lower fixed costs and improve the performance of those services. Although business leaders generally agree on the importance of measuring outsourcing results, little has been written on how best to do so. This article attempts to redress this gap in information by providing readers with some ideas on how to measure outsourcing results. A key point is that organizations must learn to utilize measurement as a way to improve the quality of therelationshipbetween the customer and the vendor—not just the quality of service.

摘要:
AbstractAlthough creativity is a high priority for almost any organization, at most companies it happens only on a hit‐or‐miss basis. The main reason for this is a general lack of awareness of what really drives corporate creativity. Myths about creativity are commonplace, and managers act on them. This article describes three simple principles of corporate creativity, based on how it actually occurs, that will significantly boost creative performance when they are recognized and acted on: (1) most creative acts are unexpected and cannot be anticipated by management; (2) rewards do more harm than good to creativity; and (3) participation is the key variable by which to manage.

摘要:
AbstractDesigned to instill total quality management concepts at the community level, community‐based quality initiatives, also known as excellence councils, are becoming prevalent throughout North America. But what makes them effective, and what is needed for them to survive? In this article, the author points to his research to detail the importance of leadership from a champion during critical transition phases and outlines five key characteristics that the champion must possess to ensure the initiative's growth and success.

摘要:
AbstractIs it possible to increase output by reducing changeover times on a quasi‐continuous process? Yes, say the employees and managers of one New Jersey production facility. As their experience shows, the key to productivity improvement lies not in investing in state‐of‐the‐art technology, but in identifying an efficient production methodology that taps the full potential of those machines and, more important, those who operate them.

摘要:
AbstractIn the aftermath of downsizing, it is becoming increasingly clear that organizations need a distinctive human resource core competency for sustained competitive advantage. Although there are many ways to develop such a competency, this article stresses the importance of multiple skill‐building programs, “new pay” for performance (gainsharing, team compensation, and at‐risk plans), 360‐degree feedback systems, and behavioral management, and offers practical guidelines for implementing such human resources managemnet approaches.
