ABSTRACTThe clinical features, sites of origin and radiological changes associated with 75 osteosarcomas of the appendicular skeleton in 74 dogs are reviewed. Clinical data and the areas affected were broadly similar to those in previously reported series of cases, but the precise sites of origin were found to vary considerably from the generally accepted predeliction site, which is the metaphysis. A wide spectrum of radiological changes was recorded. Only 61.3 per cent of tumours could be classified as characteristic. A further 21.3 per cent showed features suggestive of, but not specific for, osteosarcoma and were therefore classified as equivocal. In the remaining 17.3 per cent the radiological signs, although indicative of neoplasia and usually of malignancy, were quite uncharacteristic. Among 63 cases in which both radiographic and post‐mortem examination of the lungs was performed the incidence of pulmonary metastases was 13 per cent, with total correlation between their radiological and pathological detection. ABSTRACTA total of 109 lesions were treated in a total of 109 dogs and bitches using simple surgical excision or diathermy, with or without the simultaneous removal of the gonads. Evaluation of the case, 49 months after surgery, showed that 35 (32.1 per cent) of the tumours had regressed completely whilst 74 (67.9 per cent) had recurred. Excision using diathermy was the more effective treatment irrespective of whether the gonads were removed. There was a significant difference in the frequency of recurrence and the time interval for it to recur (P<0.05 andP<0.25 respectively) when the methods of treatment were compared, however castration of either males or females had no significant effect upon the frequency of recurrence.

ABSTRACTFeline calicivirus was isolated from eight often cats with chronic stomatitis but not from 10 healthy cats kept under similar conditions. Tests for feline leukaemia viral antigen failed to detect evidence of this infection. The age of affected cats ranged from 1.5 to 11 years with a mean of 5.7 years. Treatment with corticosteroids, megestrol acetate and tooth extraction resulted in clinical improvement but in some cases the condition recurred when treatment was finished.

ABSTRACTThe development of a new class of non‐hormonal contragestational agents provided a derivative, 2‐(4‐chlorophenyl)‐striazole|5,1‐alisoquinoline (DL 717‐IT or L 12717), with the qualities needed for application in the veterinary field as a post‐coital pregnancy‐terminating agent.Single intramuscular injections of this compound arrest pregnancy over a wide period of gestation in the bitch. A dose of 2.5 mg/kg was found to be very well tolerated and highly effective (100 per cent) when administered between the day of mating and the 15th day of pregnancy. The desired effect was not accompanied by uterine disorders or other unwanted effects.This non‐hormonal agent appears to have several real advantages over the only other drugs (oestrogens) available in veterinary practice for the termination of unwanted pregn
