ABSTRACTBacterial skin disease (or pyoderma) is a common canine disorder. It is usually associated with coagulase‐positive staphylococci which multiply on skin and induce disease as a result of a number of poorly understood mechanisms. Pyoderma usually occurs as a result of another underlying disorder. Primary causes include hypersensitivity, ectoparasites and metabolic and immunological disorders. A detailed and systematic investigation is mandatory so that the underlying cause is discovered if possible. A number of cases are idiopathic. Pyodermas may be classified according to depth of infection as this affects the type and duration of therapy required and the prognosis. Deeper forms require more aggressive and prolonged therapy. Management of pyodermas depends on the identification and correction of the underlying cause along with adjunct therapy using systemic and topical antimicrobial agents. Idiopathic cases may require protracted or even lifelong therapy with such medicaments. Glucocorticoids are generally contraindicated in the management of pyoderm

ABSTRACTMiliary dermatitis is a cutaneous response to disease states seen in the cat. It is not in itself a diagnosis. Conditions which may lead to miliary dermatitis lesions can be divided into hypersensitivity disorders, parasitic causes, infections and miscellaneous causes. A thorough investigation frequently leads to a diagnosis which enables specific therapy. Symptomatic, empirical therapy is less satisfactory and may in the long term cause side effects, The single most important cause of miliary dermatitis in the UK and elsewhere in the world is flea‐bite hypersensitivity. Other important and increasingly recognised causes include atopy and food hypersensitivity. ABSTRACTA review of otitis externa in dogs and cats is presented. Aetiology, includes primary causes: ectoparasitoses, allergic diseases, endocrine disorders, pyodermas, trauma and irritation, contact dermatitis, auto‐immune skin diseases, drug eruption, keratoseborrhoeic skin disease, tumours and pseudoneoplastic lesions, as well as secondary causes: bacteria and yeasts. Clinical aspects are variable but a practical classification distinguishes two forms: erythematoceruminous otitis externa and suppurative otitis externa. Diagnosis is made in five steps which are clinical examination, direct examination of cerumen (erythematoceruminous otitis externa) or bacterial culture and sensitivity testing (suppurative otitis externa), direct impression smears, cleaning and otoscopy, and diagnosis of underlying skin disease. Medical therapy includes cleaning of the external ear canal and local therapy (acaricides, antifungal agents, antibiotics, corticosteroids, other topical agents, the appropriate selection of an optic preparation being essential). Treatment of underlying skin disease is always necessary. Otitis externa is in fact a dermatological disease complex (like pododermatitis). ABSTRACTSmall mammals are frequently presented to the veterinary surgeon for skin disorders as children's pets, laboratory animals or commercial breeding groups. The role of the veterinary surgeon in these different categories is examined. Investigation and management of these disorders is discussed placing particular emphasis on a diagnostic approach and highlighting those areas which differ from canine and feline dermatology. Common dermatoses of these animals are described on an aetiological basis.

ABSTRACTThe hypothesis that feline urine pH can be manipulated by use of varying amounts of natural food components was tested. A relatively simple experimental model was constructed whereby soybean meal in a basal calculogenic diet was substituted by other components at varying levels and the changes in urine pH measured. In a different phase of the experiment the result of rapid change of diet was used to show the speed of response of urine pH. The effect of urine acidifying compounds was also demonstrated by the model. The prophylactic effect of three food components on urine pH was compared, with corn gluten meal the most potent. The model also demonstrated that feline urological syndrome (FUS) is possible in the presence of reduced levels of magnesium confirming previous work noting that the effect of urine pH is greater in the prevention of the condition than magnesium levels per se.
