ABSTRACTEight cases of concurrent diabetes mellitus and hyperadrenocorticism are described. In all but one dog diabetes mellitus was the first condition recognised and, in these, clinical signs attributable to hyperadrenocorticism developed further while the dogs received replacement insulin therapy. The most common signs were resistance to exogenous insulin with daily insulin replacement dosage requirements exceeding 2 iu/kg, erratic insulin requirements, continuing polydipsia/polyuria and weight loss. Lethargy and muscle weakness were variable and dermatological abnormalities were present in only four cases. Six dogs were treated with op'DDD and clinical signs resolved with improvement of glycaemic control.

ABSTRACTSagittal pubic osteotomy was used as the surgical approach in 24 cases of intrapelvic neoplasia in the dog. Thirteen cases involved the urethra, seven cases the colorectum, one case the prostate and three cases the iliac periosteum. Surgical excision was performed in 10 cases of urethral neoplasia, four cases of rectal neoplasia, two cases of periosteal fibrosarcoma and one case of chondrosarcoma. The remaining cases were assessed as inoperable due to the extent of disease and euthanasia was carried out. Access to intrapelvic structures via a caudal midline laparotomy, perineal or dorsal routes or via an episiotomy is severely limited. The structures within the pelvic canal most likely to require surgical attention are the urethra, rectum and prostate. Procedures which require wide excision, accurate anastomotic techniques or relocation of intrapelvic organs necessitate an approach that allows generous exposure. A simple method of pubic osteotomy has been employed which has allowed resection of intrapelvic neoplasms.

ABSTRACTUrethral tumours in 21 dogs are reported. Transitional cell carcinoma was the most frequent presentation. A more deliberate radiographic protocol has enhanced diagnostic ability and has improved presurgical evaluation. The use of a transpubic surgical approach has allowed the direct examination of the affected urethra and excision or resection of focal and diffuse lesions in 10 dogs with periods of remission varying from eight to 22 months. The apparent success of the surgical technique underlines the necessity for early and careful investigation of the dysuric, haematuric case.

ABSTRACTFour cases of partial rupture of the craniomedial part of the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) are presented. Clinical examination revealed only subtle signs of CCL injury. The cranial drawer sign was present in two dogs and in flexion only. As the cranial drawer sign is not always evident a tentative diagnosis of partial CCL rupture should be based on history, joint tenderness and joint effusion. Arthrotomy and careful probing of the ligament is indicated. In these cases the lesion was treated immediately after diagnosis to prevent further degeneration and possible total rupture of the ligament. A fascial graft using the ‘over the top’ reconstruction technique was performed leaving the intact portion of the ligament in situ. ABSTRACTStudies on relapsingTrypanosoma brucei bruceiinfections in dogs after Berenil treatment revealed that the first relapse occurred 13 to 64 days after chemotherapy and 36 to 79 days after inoculation. A second relapse infection was observed in two dogs 43 and 60 days after a second Berenil treatment. During the aparasitaemic period following chemotherapy in four dogs, successful transmission (as evidenced by subsequent parasitaemia) following the intraperitoneal inoculation of homogenate of brain from two of the dogs into recipient rats was obtained. Transmission with blood collected just before the animals were sacrificed was, however, negative. Hornogenates of other organs (liver, spleen, eyes, testes, kidneys, heart and lymph node) were also non‐infective. One dog inoculated with relapsed trypanosomes and treated with Berenil soon after showing parasitaemia was completely cured of the infection.
