ABSTRACTThis report describes the clinical, radiological, pathological and genetic features of an inherited dwarfism in the English Pointer. Gross enlargement of the distal ulnar, radial and tibial growth plates occurred in the first 6 weeks of life and radiographic skeletal abnormalities were present at other sites. The enlargement was due to increase in width of the zone of hypertrophic cartilage, but the columns of chondrocytes were well ordered. By 12 weeks of age an unusual type of degeneration was present beneath the surface of articular cartilage; this developed to widespread, patchy erosion of joint surfaces by 32 weeks. The genetics are compatible with a homozygous recessive mode of inheritance.

ABSTRACTOf 57 dogs included in a survey of the bacteriology of the horizontal ear canal, 31 showed clinical signs consistent with ear irritation. Twenty‐six dogs were presented for other reasons and were asymptomatic for ear irritation.All dogs sampled were anaesthetized and sterile moistened swabs used to sample the horizontal ear canal. Swabs were introduced through a sterilized (121°C for 15 min) polypropylene otoscope cone and care was taken to prevent contamination of the cone with material from elsewhere in the ear canal. Swabs were processed within 20 min of sampling and cultures were incubated aerobically and anaerobically. Swabs from the ears of asymptomatic dogs were mixed in broth prior to plating to ensure optimal elution of small numbers of organisms from the swabs.Very small numbers of bacteria and yeasts were isolated from asymptomatic dogs whilePseudomonasspp. andProteusspp. were frequent isolates from symptomatic dogs with chronic irritation.The significance of these findings is discussed in relation to the sampling and culturing techniques used in this and other surve

ABSTRACTFrom a premise that some adverse reactions to antimicrobial drugs pass unnoticed in the dog, the paper correlates available information on the subject. In so doing, it presents information on the adverse reactions that have been observed in dogs given specific antimicrobial drugs at therapeutic and at higher dose rates. Except for hypersensitivity reactions, these adverse effects are described according to the system or organ predominantly involved. In addition, adverse reactions to antimicrobial drugs observed in other animal species are included to further heighten the awareness of the practising veterinarian to the possibility of their occurrence in the dog. It is concluded that the likelihood of adverse reactions should seldom preclude the use of antimicrobial therapy when it is needed, but that it should preclude the reflex prescription of antimicrobials in practice at the merest hint of the presence of infection.

ABSTRACTA lead salt mixture was given orally to nine dogs at 5–10 mg/kg/day for periods varying from 14 to 152 days. Macroscopic lesions included reddening of bone marrow and gastric ulceration. Jaundice occurred in dogs receiving high total lead dosage. Histopathologically, periacinar fatty change in the liver was a consistent finding and at high doses of lead, this was accompanied by cholestasis and biliary hyperplasia. ABSTRACTThe rate of hair growth in the forehead, shoulder and flank regions of four normal‐coated, cross‐bred, male dogs maintained under the same controlled conditions of photoperiod, ambient temperature and diet, was measured during two six‐week periods, one during summer and the other in winter. It was found that the rate of hair growth varied between individual dogs and also between the different regions in the same dog. Growth rate was most rapid in the shoulder region, followed by the flank and then the forehead regions, and was slightly more rapid in the shoulder and flank regions of three of the dogs during summer than in winter. ABSTRACTA clinical and epidemiologic picture of canine hepatozoonosis is presented. Clinically the disease is characterized by a chronic debilitating course, persistent or recurrent fever unresponsive to antibiotics and the common babesiocidal agents, progressive anaemia, eosinophilia and polychromasia, andH. canisparasitaemia.H. caniswas the most prevalent haematozoan parasite, affecting 22 per cent of the dogs examined;B. canisaffected 11 per cent, andE. canis5 per cent.H. canisaffected all ages of dogs whileB. canisandE. canisaffected predominantly young dogs.
