ABSTRACTThe literature on the genetics of progressive retinal atrophy has been reviewed with reference to hereditary degeneration of the retina in man and other animals. Of the possible modes of transmission only simple recessive autosomal genes have been unequivocally implicated. The British Veterinary Association Scheme to combat this illness is criticized as being unsuited to a recessively controlled condition which often makes its first appearance in mature animals. Criticisms are that the breeding potential of the afflicted animals is reduced inefficiently and in any case that afflicted dogs form only a small proportion of those carrying the gene. It is suggested that a register be opened to note the afflicted, carrier and suspect carrier animals and that stronger pressures than at present be brought to bear on the owners to prevent breeding.Résumé.Revue de la littérature sur la génétique de l'atrophie rétinienne progressive en tenant compte des particularités de la dégénérescence héréditaire de la rétine chez l'homme et les animaux. Parmi les modes possibles de transmission, seuls les gènes récessifs autosomiques simples ont pu être mis en évidence d'une manière non équivoque. On critique le schéma proposé par la British Veterinary Association pour la lutte contre cette affection car elle ne s'applique pas à des états s'expliquant par les gènes récessifs qui conditionnent souvent la première apparition de la maladie chez les animaux adultes. Cette critique s'applique également au potentiel de transmission de la maladie par les animaux atteints qui serait réduit d'une manière insuffisante, et au fait que de toute manière, les chiens atteints ne représentent qu'une faible proportion des porteurs de gène. On suggère la nécessité d'ouvrir un registre pour noter les sujets atteints ou porteurs de gène avérés ou suspectés, et des mesures de pression plus efficaces que celles utilisées jusqu'ici sur les propriétaires, de façon à ce qu'ils empêchent la reproduction de tels animaux.Zusammenfassung.Die Literatur über die Genese der progressiven Netzhautatrophie wurde im Hinblick auf die erbliche Degeneration der Netzhaut beim Menschen und bei anderen Tieren geprüft. Von den möglichen Übertragungsarten wurden nur einfach rezessiv autosomale Gene einstimmig genannt. Der Plan der British Veterinary Association zur Bekämpfung dieser Krankheit wird als ungeeignet für einen rezessiv übertragenen Zustand kritisiert, der oft erst in reifen Tieren in Erscheinung tritt. Die kritischen Einwände besagen, dass die Fortpflanzungsfähigkeit betroffener Tiere nicht wirksam genug reduziert wird und dass überdies die betroffenen Hunde nur einen kleinen Teil der Geträger darstellen. ABSTRACTIn a colony of large felines, a Siberian tiger died after having shown lameness for 4 months.X‐ray examination 3 months prior to death revealed extensive bone proliferations around the left carpus and cavitations in the lungs.In spite of tuberculostatic therapy the animal died and a final diagnosis of cavernous lung tuberculosis(M. bovis) and a related osteo‐arthropathy was made.A 7‐year‐old Siberian tiger owned by the Royal Rotterdam Zoo ‘Blijdorp’, was brought for examination to the veterinary surgery clinic of the State University of Utrecht. The patient walked with difficulty and showed thickening of the left and right carpi. The weight of the animal was 180 kg. After sedation by means of an intramuscular injection of 45 mg of phencyclidine (Sernylan‐Parke Davis) and 90 mg of acepromazine (Ventranquil‐Philips Duphar), combined with 10 mg of atropine, it was possible to inject 19 ml of 5 % thiopentone sodium (B.P. Boots Pure Drug Go. Ltd) into the tail vein. Narcosis was maintained using nitrous oxide and halothane (Fluothane‐ICI Ltd).Résumé.Un tigre de Sibérie, appartenant à un groupe de gros félins est mort après avoir présenté pendant 4 mois des phénomènes paralytiques. ABSTRACTA condition causing neonatal mortality in litters of puppies presents all the definitive features of the respiratory distress syndrome as seen in other species such as the horse and man. Histopathology of lung reveals alveolar collapse, distended respiratory bronchioles and in some instances the presence of eosinophilic hyaline membranes. Evidence is presented which indicates that massive phospholipid release from lung tissue is involved in the pathogenesis of the condition. This may be related to extensive damage to great alveolar cells. The exact aetiology of the condition is not known.Résumé.Les auteurs décrivent un syndrome occasionnant une mortalité néonatale des portées de chiots et qui présente toutes les caractéristiques du syndrome de détresse respiratoire observé dans d'autres espèces animales et chez l'homme. L'examen histopathologique des poumons montra un collapsus alvéolaire, une distension des bronchioles et parfois la présence de membranes hyalines éosinophiles. Certains faits montrent qu'une libération massive de phospholipides à partir du tissu pulmonaire est impliquée dans la pathogénie de cette affection, ce qui serait en rapport avec les lésions des grandes cellules alvéolaires; cependant, on ne sait rien de la pathogénie exacte de l'affection.Zusammenfassung.Ein Zustand, der neonatale Mortalität in Würfen von Hunden verursacht, zeigt alle die definitiven Eigenschaften des Atemnotsyndroms bei anderen Spezies wie dem Pferd und dem Menschen. Die Histopathologie der Lunge ergibt kollabierte Alveolen, erweiterte respiratorische Bronchiolen und in manchen Fällen die Anwesenheit eosinophiler hyaliner Membranen. Es werden Tatsachen genannt, die darauf schliessen lassen, dass massive Phospholipid‐freisetzungen aus dem Lungengewebe mit der Pathogenese des Zustands zu tun haben. ABSTRACTThe occurrence of the nephrotic syndrome in a dog is reported. The outstanding clinical feature was oedema; profuse proteinuria and hypo‐proteinaemia were also observed. Steroid therapy, use of a high protein diet and administration of diuretics failed to halt the course of the disease. The renal lesions were morphologically similar to those of membranous glomerulonephritis in man.Résumé.Les auteurs décrivent un cas de syndrome néphrotique chez un chien; le signe le plus important était l'oedème, et on a également noté une albuminurie considérable et une hypo‐protéinémie. Le traitement par les stéroïdes et les diurétiques ainsi qu'un régime riche en protéines n'ont pas empêché la progression de la maladie. Les lésions morphologiques du rein étaient semblables à celles que l'on observe dans la glomérulonéphrite membraneuse de l'homme.Zusammenfassung.Es wird über das Auftreten des nephrotischen Syndroms bei einem Hund berichtet. Das auffällige klinische Merkmal war Ödem; es wurden auch profuse Proteinurie und Hypoproteinaemie beobachtet.
