ABSTRACTThe kinetics and efficacy of a cinchophen prednisolone combination preparation (PLT) were assessed in the dog. Cinchophen administered at a dose rate of 12‐5 mg/kg intravenously had a volume of distribution (Vd area) of 0–13 litres/kg, a clearance rate (Cl) of 0–15 litres/h and a half‐life (t1/2β of 7–92 hours. Following oral administration the bioavailability was 87‐21 per cent. Prednisolone administered at a dose rate of 0–15 mg/kg intravenously had a Vd area of 2–7 litres/kg, a CI of 0–116 litres/h and a t1/2β of 1–11 hours. PLT given to dogs with osteoarthritis at a dosage range of between 25 and 44 mg/kg per day cinchophen and between 0–125 and 0–220 mg/kg per day prednisolone for a maximum of 14 days significantly improved lameness (P<0–001), weight bearing (P<0–005), joint mobility (P<0–01) and stiffness (P<0–001) scores and was similar in cl

ABSTRACTChanges in total thyroxine (T4), free T4 and total tri‐iodothyronine (T3) were measured in 13 cats after the intravenous injection of varying doses of thyrotrophin stimulating hormone (TSH) (0–5 U/cat n = 6; 1 U/cat n = 8; 1 U/kg bodyweight, n = 7) or thyrotrophin releasing hormone (TRH) (100 ug/cat, n = 10). All three doses of TSH resulted in a significant (P<0–05) rise in T4, free T4 and T3 levels, with the mean peak in hormone concentrations occurring six to eight hours after injection. The three doses of TSH all appeared to produce maximal stimulation of thyroid hormone secretion. The mean percentage increase in hormone concentrations at seven hours following the three doses of TSH ranged from 167 to 198 per cent for T4, 240 to 365 per cent for free T4, and 73 to 116 per cent for T3. Following administration of TRH there was also a significant (P<0–05) rise in T4, and free T4. The mean peak in T4 and free T4 levels occurred at four hours, and mean increases in hormone levels at this time were 92 per cent for T4, and 198 per cent for free T4. ABSTRACTA pelvic radiographic examination was performed on 15 large breed dogs without history and clinical sign of hip dysplasia. The effect of anaesthesia and of two stress‐radiographic methods on the coxofemoral subluxation was evaluated. With anaesthesia a mild coxofemoral subluxation was seen in 31 per cent of the dogs, which all appeared radiographically normal when sedated. The Norberg angle was significantly decreased in anaesthetised dogs (P<0–05). When dogs with a radiographically normal coxofemoral joint conformation were submitted to a stress‐radiographic examination there was a shift towards an increased coxofemoral subluxation. Subluxation was seen in 70 per cent of the dogs when the knee fixation method of positioning was applied and in 100 per cent of the dogs when the wedge method was used. Correspondingly the Norberg angle decreased significantly when the coxofermoral joints were stressed (Pkneefix<0–00003; Pwedge= 0–000008). ABSTRACTMandibulectomy or maxillectomy was performed in dogs for the removal of 100 bone‐involved oral tumours of varying histological type. These techniques provided excellent results when used for the excision of carcinomas achieving one year survival rates for basal cell carcinomas (acanthomatous epulides) and squamous cell carcinomas of 100 and 84 per cent, respectively. Mandibulectomy and maxillectomy were, therefore, considered to achieve good wide local excision and to be the techniques of choice for the management of oral carcinomas. Prognoses for sarcomas were, however, considerably poorer. There was a high incidence of local recurrence (32 per cent) and distant metastasis (27 per cent) and one year survival rates for fibrosarcomas, osteosarcomas and malignant melanomas were 50, 42 and 0 per cent, respectively. Mandibulectomy and maxillectomy were not considered to achieve radical local excisional margins in all cases and were inadequate as the sole form of treatment for sarcomas of the oral cavity. Mandibulectomy and maxillectomy may be useful, however, as part of a combined modality approach to oral sarcomas or may be justified as the sole therapy where adjuvant modalities are not availabl

ABSTRACTPlain and myelographic studies were carried out on 28 dobermanns clinically affected with cervical spondylomyelopathy. The radiographic appearance identified was compared with that found in studies of 24 similar sized dogs of other breeds, and also 115 mature dobermanns clinically normal at presentation. Twenty‐eight of these clinically normal dobermanns were considered to possess radiographic changes similar to those identified in the affected animals. During the next five years 20 (71‐8 per cent) of the animals developed signs of cervical spondylomyelopathy. The remaining 87 dobermanns are considered by their owners to have remained normal. It is suggested that careful radiographic assessment offers a real basis for the identification of potential ‘wobblers’. It also offers a means of identifying sound breeding stock as one method of reducing the incidence of an increasingly serious multifactorial

ABSTRACTA total of 24 upper gastrointestinal examinations were performed on four weanling beagle puppies over six weeks, using liquid barium (10 ml/kg bodyweight of 60 per cent w/v barium sulphate suspension] and barium food (8 g/kg of crushed kibble dog food and 7 ml/kg bodyweight of 60 per cent w/v barium sulphate suspension) as contrast media. The radiographic appearance was similar to that noted in adult dogs except for the consistent location of the pylorus on or near the midline. Duodenal pseudoulcers were seen more often with liquid barium and the caecal shadows were identified more often with the longer examination time with barium food. The stomach of the puppies appeared to have discriminatory emptying function; that is, semi‐solid food was emptied from the stomach at a slower rate (210 to 450 minutes) than liquid (60 to 90 minutes). Solid meals emptied faster in puppies than in adult dogs. Dosages of 13 to 15 mg/kg bodyweight for the liquid barium examination and 14 g of ground kibble and 16 ml of barium sulphate suspension per m2of body surface area for the barium food examination are suggested as more appropriate for contrast studies in puppie
