ABSTRACTAs part of an investigation into low chick production in relation to the number of eggs laid by exhibition budgerigars, a study was carried out into the role, if any, of shell thickness and porosity to water vapour. Shell thickness was the same in clear eggs, fertile eggs, those containing dead‐in‐shell embryos and those with desiccated contents, and averaged 0–2 mm. Shell porosity was found to be the same in most clear eggs, fertile eggs, eggs in which the embryo had died very early and eggs containing an infected dead‐in‐shell chick. These had an average water loss, under standard conditions, of 1–54 per cent of the initial weight per 24 hours. Non‐infected dead‐in‐shell eggs lost 0–27 per cent, eggs with desiccated contents, either an embryo or clear lost 7–95 per cent and cracked eggs, 5–64 per cent. ABSTRACTThis report describes 14 dogs (mean age six years, mean bodyweight 25 kg) and three cats (mean age 9‐3 years, mean bodyweight 6–7 kg) with coxofemoral luxations of one to 91 days duration (median four days). In 47 per cent of the cases concomitant fractures or luxations (including three bilateral luxations) were present. Closed reduction was immediately unsuccessful in five cases and eventually unsuccessful in seven cases, whereas in five cases the nature of the additional trauma required surgical intervention. Via a craniolateral approach to the hip joint, combined with trochanter osteotomy in 24 per cent of the cases, the luxation was reduced and remnants of the capsule were sutured in 82 per cent of the cases. In all cases an extra‐articular iliofemoral suture band was applied to limit the range of motion of the femoral head. The technique is described and illustrated in detail. The success rate proved to be strongly related to the suture material and varied from excellent to poor. ABSTRACTOne hundred and ninety‐seven faecal samples were examined forAngiostrongylus vasorumlarvae, from dogs throughout Cornwall, which were presented with one or more clinical signs consistent with infection, were known to eat slugs or snails or were related to an infected dog. Twenty samples (10‐1 per cent) contained nematode larvae, of theseA vasorumlarvae were identified in eight (4‐1 per cent) and larvae ofFilaroidesspecies in eight (4‐1 per cent). Seven of the eight dogs positive forA vasorumwere found to have been infected within an area six miles in diameter incorporating Redruth. Statistical analysis suggested that this aggregation of cases was unlikely to be a random event (P<0–01). No correlation between published data on the distribution of the intermediate host, slugs and snails and the cases ofA vasoruminfection reported in this paper could be found. ABSTRACTA total of four pregnancies were terminated in three bitches (two beagles and one flatcoated retriever) with a single dose of 20 mg/kg (one case), two doses of 8‐3 mg/kg (one case) or 20 mg/kg plus 40 mg/kg (two cases) RU 486 by mouth (Mifepristone; Roussel‐Uclaf, France) from day 26 to day 36 after the first day of mating of the bitch. Abortions occurred within two, four, 11 and 11 days after the initial treatment, respectively. The clinical status of the bitches was similar to that observed during a normal parturition, ie, lowering of the body temperature, shivering, panting and nesting behaviour. No side effects were seen. The beagle bitch that aborted twice, was mated at the first oestrus after the first abortion, conceived and aborted the same number of puppies the second time. The peripheral plasma progesterone concentration at the time of treatment in all bitches was<75 nmol/litre. It had decreased to between 24‐2 and 13‐1 nmol/litre at the time of abortion and to between 4‐0 to 0–5 nmol/litre at four to 15 days after the initial treatment. Peripheral plasma levels of prolactin increased three‐ to fourfold within 24 to 48 hours after treatment, concomitant with the drop in progesterone and had returned to basal levels within two to three days. Prolactin concentrations also increased around the time of intrauterine fetal death. Prostaglandin F2aα‐metabolite concentrations increased slowly after treatment, and around the time of abortion the levels increased five‐ to 10‐fold. ABSTRACTA haematological disorder in a dog characterised by a massive leucocytosis, mainly composed of eosinophils and their precursors is reported here. The normal composition of cells in the bone marrow was displaced in favour of the eosinophils and their precursors.
