ABSTRACTEleven dogs were diagnosed as having solitary or multiple prostatic cysts in an abdominal, pelvic or perineal position. Common presenting signs included urinary dysfunction, faecal tenesmus and abdominal distension. Cystography was found to be the most consistently accurate technique for differentiating the cysts from the bladder and other abdominal soft tissue masses whilst urethrography often highlighted their prostatic origin.Complete surgical resection of the cysts was attempted in nine dogs, the complexity of dissection being dictated by cyst size and the extent of adhesions to adjacent organs. Nine dogs were castrated. Urinary incontinence continued post‐operatively in four dogs but later resolved in three of these. Seven dogs were alive and symptom‐free over post‐operative periods ranging from one to three years.Despite some of its technical difficulties, surgical excision appears to be a successful approach to even the larger prostatic cysts. ABSTRACTThe radiographs of 60 cases of canine nasal neoplasia were reviewed. The dorso‐ventral intra‐oral view provided most information and the lateral view supplied supplementary detail. The most common changes were turbinate destruction rostrally and caudally, with a homogenous increase in radiopacity. Bilateral involvement was present in 38 cases. Absence (26) and thinning (7) of the vomer bone were found, as was deviation of the cartilaginous septum (11). ABSTRACTAccurate localization of the lesions in two dogs with progressive neurological disease was demonstrated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The first dog had unilateral cerebellar signs with associated paradoxical vestibular symptoms. The CSF tap and clinical localization suggested a right‐sided cerebellar tumour and this was confirmed with MRI scanning. The second dog had predominantly asymmetrical fore‐brain signs with circling, personality changes, seizures and contralateral proprioceptive deficits. CSF analysis suggested an inflammatory or neoplastic condition. MRI showed a diffuse oedematous lesion of the left cerebral hemisphere which corresponded exactly with the lesions seen at necropsy. ABSTRACTArterial blood samples were collected under sedation, from the femoral artery of 35 dogs suffering from laryngeal paralysis. Pre‐operatively, the dogs showed a moderate degree of arterial hypoxaemia (mean PaO277 mmHg), with the worst affected clinically showing the most severe hypoxia. Following corrective surgery there was a significant improvement in PaO2tensions (90 mmHg). A group of 20 control dogs were also sedated and sampled. ABSTRACTPolarized light biomicroscopy was used to examine the normal pre‐corneal tear film in 25 dogs. Blink rates were also determined. The normal range of surface morphology of the canine tear film was established. Three categories of surface patterning of the lipid layer of the tear film were identified. These were: (a) a wave‐like pattern, (b) a pattern of irregular islets, and (c) a pattern resembling the polished surface of granite. All three patterns may occur in the same eye. The inter‐blink thickness of the lipid layer of the pre‐corneal tear film varied between 0·013 μm (the minimum thickness discernable by this method) and over 0·581 μm (the maximum thickness at which coloured interference fringes are clearly defined) in localized areas. The mean total blink rate was 14·2/min. Overall, incomplete blinks constituted approximately 66 per cent of the total blink rate, but the ratio of complete to incomplete blinks varied considerably between animals. By dividing the dogs into thick and thin lipid layer groupings, it was possible to demonstrate a statistically greater rate of complete blinks (P<0·05, Mann‐Whitney U test) in animals with a thinner lipid layer. ABSTRACTStudies were carried out on 40 dogs premedicated with acepromazine (0·05 mg. kg‐1) and atropine (0·02 mg. kg‐1) to determine the minimum infusion rate of propofol needed to maintain anaesthesia and to compare the quality of the anaesthesia with that produced by halothane/nitrous oxide/oxygen. In 30 dogs anaesthesia was induced with propofol and maintained with a continuous infusion and in the other ten dogs anaesthesia was induced with thiopentone and maintained with the inhalation agents. An infusion rate of 0·4 mg. kg‐1min‐1of propofol produced surgical anaesthesia in dogs breathing oxygen or oxygen‐enriched air. Cardiovascular and respiratory effects were similar to those in dogs anaesthetized with halothane/nitrous oxide and with both anaesthetic regimens myocardial oxygen consumption appeared to increase with increasing duration of anaesthesia. A possible familial susceptibility resulting in a more prolonged recovery was revealed and propofol infusion was associated with a 16 per cent incidence of vomiting in the recovery period. It was concluded that in canine anaesthesia the continuous infusion of propofol to maintain anaesthesia in healthy dogs was safe but less satisfactory than the use of halothane/n

SUMMARYCats submitted for post‐mortem examination have been studied for persistent FeLV infection using immune histological methods. Persistent FeLV infection turned out to cause the most frequent lethal infectious disease of the cat. In the post‐mortem material, 16 per cent of the cats were found positive whereas 3 per cent can be assumed for the normal feline population. FeLV‐positive animals die from FeLV‐associated non‐tumourous conditions in 75 per cent of the cases rather than from leucosis. The most important non‐tumourous conditions are anaemia, feline infectious peritonitis, inflammation of the respiratory tract and liver degeneration. Important differences have been found between the various forms of leucosis which can also be distinguished in the small animal practice concerning their association with FeLV infection.
