ABSTRACTThis review deals with three topics. First, a description of the biological effects and possible site of action of progestagens in the bitch. Second, a discussion of published work on the clinical use of progestagens with particular reference to the time of administration and side effects attributable to dosing. The final section of the paper is concerned with the effect of the long‐term oral administration of medroxyprogesterone acetate and megestrol acetate on reproductive function in the Beagle bitch.Résumé.Cet article porte sur trois matières. Les auteurs commencent par dérire les effets biologiques et le site éventuel oú agiront les progestagénes chez la chienne. Ensuite, ils passent en revue les publications existantes sur l'emploi clinique des progestagènes, en faisant une allusion particulière au choix du moment de leur administration et aux effets secondaires causés par le dosage. Dans la dernière partie de l'article, ils se penchent sur l'effet d'une administration orale, pendant une période prolongée, d'acétate de médroxyprogestérone et d'acétate magestrol sur la fonction reproductrice de la chienne beagle.Zusammenfassung.Diese Arbeit behandelt drei Themen. Das erste ist eine Beschreibung der biologischen Wirkungen und der möglichen Wirkungsstellen von Progestagenen bei der Hündin. Das zweite ist eine Besprechung veröffentlichter Arheiten über die klinische Anwendung von Progestagenen unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Anwendungszeit und der Nebenwirkungen, die sich der Dosierung zuschreiben lassen. ABSTRACTThis presentation aims to review what is currently known of several aspects of the endocrinology of reproduction in the dog. Each phase of the oestrous cycle is described with respect to the changes occurring in clinical appearance, vaginal cytology, behaviour and the levels of pituitary and ovarian hormones; comment is also made about the factors influencing the length of the oestrous interval. The variable nature of the reproductive cycle in the bitch is emphasized as is the care necessary, on the part of the practising veterinary surgeon, in interpreting the significance of the changes that occur.Résumé.Dans cet article, les auteurs passent en revue les connaissances actuelles sur divers aspects de I'endocrinologie de la reproduction chez le chien. 11s décrivent chaque phase du cycle de l'oestre en considérant les changements de l'aspect clinique, de la cytologie vaginale, du comportement et du taw des hormones pituitaires et ovariennes; ils parlent également des facteurs qui influencent la durée de l'intervalle entre les oestres. 11s soulignent la nature variable du cycle reproducteur de la chienne, ainsi que le soin avec lequel le chirurgien vétérinaire doit interpreter I'importance des changements qui se produisent.Zusammenfassung.Diese Arbeit beabsichtigt darzustellen, was gegenwärtig über verschiedene Aspekte der Endokrinologie der Fortpflanzung des Hundes bekannt ist. Jede Phase des Östruszyklus wird hinsichtlich der Veränderungen des klinischen Bildes, der Vaginalcytologie, des Verhaltens und der Konzentrationen der Hypophysen‐ und Ovarialhormone beschrieben; ausserdem werden die Faktoren behandelt, welche die Länge des Östrusintervalls beeinflussen. Die veränderliche Natur des Fortpflanzungszyklus der Hündin wird betont, ebenso wie die Sorgfalt, die seitens des praktischen Tierarztes bei der Beurteilung der Signifikanz der auftretenden Veränderunge

ABSTRACTA frontal mucocoele in a 1‐year‐old dog resulted from trauma which caused obstruction to the naso‐frontal opening. Patency of the naso‐frontal opening was re‐established surgically. The dog was in good health 2 years post‐operatively.Résumé.A la suite d'un traumatisme, un mucocèle frontal causait une obstruction de l'orifice nasofrontal chez un chien âgé d'un an. Par une intervention chirurgicale on a pu dégager l'orifice naso‐frontal.
