摘要:
ABSTRACTImplants of plaited carbon fibre have been used in the repair of ruptured Achilles tendons in ten dogs. Additionally the hock was held in extension by inserting a screw through the fibular tarsal bone and the tibia. When the screw was removed in the sixth week the repaired tendon was thick and taut, and leg use was thereafter virtually normal.

摘要:
ABSTRACTAn arteriovenous fistula in the metatarsal pad of a young dog is described. The lesion was apparently acquired traumatically when the dog was nine months of age, and was characterized by periodic episodes of bleeding from the pad during the next 21 months. The nature of the lesion was diagnosed by physical, radiographical and histological examination, and it was treated successfully by surgical excision.

摘要:
ABSTRACTIn the Tours area of the Val‐de Loire, haemograms carried out in 40 dogs with canine parvovirus disease showed that in 30 cases the viral infection was complicated by canine haemobartonellosis. To the picture, typical of the former infection, were added very severe anaemia, fever, locomotor difficulties, arthralgia, adenopathy, respiratory difficulties (dyspnoea, polypnoea and anoxia) and circulatory disorders (tachycardia and capillary fragility). The blood picture was markedly abnormal, anisocytosis, poikilocytosis and anisochromia, being found together with alterations in the blood counts (neutrophils 85 to 90% high; leucocytes, 400 to 500 mm3; erythrocytes, 0·6 to 1·5 × 106mm3).Symptomatic treatment and serotherapy (equine hyperimmune serum against feline panleucopenia) were given for the parvovirus infection. Of the antimicrobial agents, only chloramphenicol, a spiramycin metronidazole association and sulphamethoxypyridazine gave good results.A high dose of intramuscular chlorpromazine (2 to 4 mg/kg b.w.) repeated 48 h later, followed by an 8‐day course of oral treatment at a moderate dosage (1 mg/kg b.w. daily) produced complete clinical cure and disappearance ofHaemobartonella canisfrom the peripheral blood. It is considered that these results support the view that an intercurrent infection may upset the balance existing between the host and parasite in carriers ofH. canisand produce a virulent infection (see F

摘要:
ABSTRACTMonthly regrowth of clipped hair was measured in greyhounds over a two‐year period; plasma progesterone and testosterone were measured at the time of clipping.Entire males and females showed virtually no growth in late winter and late summer while maximal growth occurred in mid‐summer. Oestrus, and its associated hormones, appeared to suppress hair growth in entire females while spayed females showed good growth throughout most of the year.Low environmental temperature was considered to depress growth in late win

摘要:
ABSTRACTThree male Beagle litter‐mates, which were kept in the same environment and fed on the same diet, were studied from 20 to 45 weeks of age. The first ejaculates were obtained at 33 weeks in one and 34 weeks in two of the puppies. Ejaculatory volume, sperm concentration, libido increased quickly and although the early ejaculates contained large numbers of abnormal spermatozoa they soon decreased. By 45 weeks of age the seminal characteristics were comparable with those reported for adults. Plasma testosterone concentrations increased at the time that the first ejaculate was obtaine

摘要:
ABSTRACTA computerized system of storing and retrieving case records is described. Data which are related to clinical cases are recorded and coded. The coded data are input to a computer. The data may be displayed and complex correlative questions may be addressed to the database.
