摘要:
ABSTRACTThe prevalence ofChlamydia psittaciinfection in household, feral and farm cats in Britain was investigated. Chlamydia were isolated from 30 per cent of conjunctival swabs collected from 753 household cats with conjunctivitis. The prevalence of active chlamydial infection was highest in cats in the age group five weeks to nine months. Males were more frequently infected than females. Cats with chlamydial conjunctivitis usually had antibody titres greater than 1024 as assessed by indirect immunofluorescence. Chlamydia appeared to be endemic in two out of three feral cat colonies on the basis of serological evidence and occasional isolations. Cats on 10 of 22 sheep farms (45 per cent) had serological evidence of chlamydial infection, and this was confirmed on two farms by isolation of the organism from conjunctival and, or, rectal swabs. This is the first survey of infection withChlamydia psittaciin cat populations in Britain.

摘要:
ABSTRACTNasopharyngeal stenosis secondary to chronic upper respiratory tract infection is described in four cats. The stenosis is caused by a thin but tough inflammatory membrane which develops across the proximal nasopharynx, partly or completely occluding it. Diagnosis is aided by use of a dental mirror for caudal rhinoscopy, together with test passage of a fine catheter through the ventral nasal meatus. All four cases were treated successfully by surgical resection of the membrane through an incision in the soft palate. Nasopharyngeal stenosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of all chronic upper respiratory disease in cats.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe main clinical features of 12 cases of bacterial endocarditis were lameness, pyrexia, lethargy, anorexia and systolic cardiac murmurs. The lameness varied from generalised stiffness to an inability to stand and walk. Multiple joint involvement was typical. Two types of joint pathology were identified. A marked synovitis with granulation tissue sometimes covering the articular cartilage was present in some joints associated with the presence of bacterial organisms. Other joints proved sterile and showed a milder synovial pathology. In many dogs both an infective arthritis and a non‐infective arthritis co‐existed. Bilaterally symmetrical joint involvement was typical of the non‐infective arthritis. The pathogenesis of the latter was likely to involve the deposition of circulating immune complexes (bacterial antigens, antibody and complement) in the synovium. The infective arthritis was presumed to be secondary to embolic disease, ie, the spread of infected emboli from the heart valve to the joints. Treatment was unsuccessful in all

摘要:
ABSTRACTClinical and pathological features are described in an eight‐week‐old weimaraner puppy which showed hindleg weakness and subpial myelin depletion in the spinal cord. The myelopathy was accompanied by pial thickening, vacuolation of sensory neurons in the spinal cord and of neurons in the medulla. Swollen axons occurred in the spinal cord, cerebellum and internal capsule. Comparisons are made between this case and a recently recorded form of hypomyelination in weimaraner d

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe clinicopathological features of tonsillar polyps in eight dogs are described. They occurred in aged animals (mean 12.5 years) and caused gagging and retching in two. In the other six the polyps were an incidental finding during anaesthesia for unrelated surgical procedures.Seven of the polyps were considered to be of inflammatory origin, consisting of a fibrous tissue core containing dilated lymphatics and veins and a variable lymphocytic component. The eighth had microscopic features suggestive of a developmental vascular anomaly (hamartoma).

摘要:
ABSTRACTForty‐three dogs affected by canine leishmaniasis (CL) with skin lesions have been studied clinically and histopathologically. Identification of leishmaniads in tissues was achieved using indirect immunoperoxidase staining. According to both macroscopic and microscopic lesions, four different dermatological patterns have been observed. Twenty‐six dogs showed alopecia and desquamation as the main skin lesions. Histologically a diffuse non‐suppurative dermatitis, with numerous leishmaniads inside macrophages was present. Ten animals showed skin ulcerations on limbs, especially over articulations. Histologically, the number of leishmaniads was very reduced. Five animals presented a generalised nodular disease. Each nodule corresponded with a focal accumulation of macrophages, multinucleated giant cells and lymphocytes, with a high number of parasites. Finally, two dogs presented generalised skin pustules. The possible pathogenesis and the differential diagnosis of each form is disc
