ABSTRACTThe occurrence of galvanic corrosion between a broken stainless steel drill bit and an adjacent stainless steel screw is described. These apparently similar metals are shown by metallurgical analysis to be significantly different and to be capable of inducing electrolysis.

ABSTRACTLipid keratopathy in a cat is recorded. Material removed at superficial keratectomy was examined by light, polarizing and electron microscopy. The lesion consists of two zones: (1) a highly cellular zone containing mainly modified keratocytes situated immediately beneath the anterior epithelium, and (2) a band of lipid debris and macrophages within the anterior third of the corneal stroma. Detailed ultrastructural pathological observations are reported on both zones. The pathogenesis and treatment of the condition are discussed.

ABSTRACTFour cases of feline cryptococcosis, with lesions mainly confined to the nasal passages and skin, were treated orally with the antifungal agent, 5‐fluorocytosine, augmented in two cases by intradermal injections of an autogeneous vaccine. The cats were all Siamese. Treatment was successful although one cat showed recurrence of skin lesions when 5‐fluorocytosine therapy was discontinued, but the condition cleared after a further course of the agent. ABSTRACTA four‐year‐old entire male cocker spaniel was presented with a history of dyspnoea due to tracheal stenosis.As part of the clinical approach, a coagulation screening profile revealed moderately reduced levels of Factor VIII procoagulant activity (VIII: C), but elevated factor VHI‐related antigen levels (VIIIR: Ag). A diagnosis of haemophilia A (classic haemophilia) was made and the tracheal stenosis attributed to a mediastinal haematoma.The dyspnoea was alleviated by the surgical insertion of a tracheostomy tube and the dog was treated with citrated whole blood and fresh‐frozen canine plasma.Response to treatment was excellent and follow‐up radiography three months later revealed resolution of the tracheal

ABSTRACTThyroid function has been assessed using radioimmunoassay kits for total and free thyroxine (T4). A radioimmunoassay kit for total T4, designed for human samples, was unable to detect total T4 in 35 per cent of normal canine serum tested, due to the kit being designed to measure total T4 over the normal human range which is four times the canine normal range. The canine normal range for free T4 (7.5–50 pmol/1) was found to be of the same order as the human range and therefore a free T4 kit was suitable for measuring the free hormone in dogs. In response to thyroid stimulating hormone in normal dogs, total T4 rose 6.2 times whereas free T4 rose only 2.6 times.Hypothyroid animals could be distinguished from normal dogs by free T4 assay whereas they were indistinguishable from many normal dogs by total T4 assay. Response to thyroid stimulating hormone was used to confirm hypothyroidism, but also revealed one animal with normal total and free T4 but which had a negligible response on stimulatio

ABSTRACTTwenty‐five mixed‐breed clinically normal mature dogs were evaluated for respiratory disease by thoracic radiographs, complete blood counts, modified Knott's test, fluorescent antibody test for heartworms, bronchoscopy, tracheal washing, and bronchial brushing. Gross necropsies, cultures of lung parenchyma, and microscopic studies of lung at the site of and adjacent to the tracheal washing and bronchial brushing techniques were performed.
