The technique was used clinically and in a post mortem study in dogs. The quantity of cancellous bone graft obtained with an acetabular reamer was greater than the cancellous bone graft obtained from the wing of the ilium with a curette.

ABSTRACTThe surgical and medical records of 67 dogs and nine cats which underwent median sternotomy over a five‐year period were reviewed. The indication for median sternotomy and the short and longer term complications were recorded. Twenty‐six of the dogs died or were euthanased within 48 hours of the surgery as a consequence of the pre‐existing disease or complications of the intrathoracic surgical procedure. A further four dogs were enthanased between 48 hours and 14 days following confirmation of neoplastic processes. Thirty‐seven dogs were alive at 14 days; of these, seven dogs (19 per cent) experienced short‐term wound complications, including haemorrhage, wound infection, thoracic limb neurological deficits and excessive postoperative discomfort. Of the 37 dogs alive for longer term follow‐up, eight dogs (22 per cent) experienced wound complications, including haemorrhage, sternal fracture, sternal osteomyelitis and delayed wound healing. ABSTRACTClinical, haematological and immunological data are presented from 14 dogs with autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) serially monitored for up to 945 days after initial presentation. At the time of diagnosis, all dogs had severe anaemia (mean packed cell volume [PCV] 17.6±7.1 per cent) with leucocytosis in seven cases and thrombocytopenia in four dogs. The Coombs' test was positive in all cases. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) autoantibody alone was identified in eight cases, a combination of IgG and IgM autoantibodies was recognised in three cases, and in two dogs only IgM autoantibody was recorded (complement fixing in one of these dogs).All dogs were treated with immunosuppressive doses of corticosteroids and some animals also received cyclophosphamide (four cases), azathio‐prine (two cases), blood transfusion (four cases) or underwent splenectomy (two cases). Two dogs died during the initial episode of AIHA. In 12 dogs, the anaemia was resolved by an average of 36.3 ±16.0 days after initial presentation, but autoantibody titre often persisted after clinical improvement and normalisation of PCV. Four dogs had a clinical relapse 67 to 170 days after initial presentation and one of these dogs subsequently died from thromboembolic disease. One dog developed lymphocytic thyroiditis and serum antinuclear antibody at day 691 after initial presentation, and two cases developed disease consistent with autoimmune thrombocytopenia (AITP) at 365 and 618 days post initial presentation. ABSTRACTClarithromycin was administered to eight dogs intravenously and orally. A suspension or a tablet was given to animals both immediately after feeding and on an empty stomach. Neither the formulation nor the time of administration in relation to feeding significantly influenced the pharmacokinetic parameters. The lowest mean (±SD) maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) of 3.0 ±0.6 μg/ml, the lowest bioavailability (F) of approximately 69 per cent and the shortest time above the proposed breakpoint of susceptibility (L) of 2.9 ±1.3 hours were observed with the suspension after feeding. The highest Cmaxof 3.6 ±0.8 (Jig/ml, the highest F of 83 per cent and the longest L of 4.5 ±2.0 hours were observed with the suspension in the fasted group. The mean time at which Cmaxoccurred (tmax) was between one and two hours after administration. ABSTRACTTwo dogs with signs of right‐sided congestive cardiac failure, due to recurrent pericardial effusion secondary to the presence of intraperi‐cardial neoplasia, were treated by percutaneous balloon pericardiotomy. The first patient was euthanased one month after the procedure while the second patient developed ascites as a result of obstruction of the caudal vena cava by the growing tumour and was euthanased 14 weeks after the procedure. ABSTRACTA six‐month‐old Rhodesian ridgeback dog was presented for evaluation of facial swelling. Chronic renal failure was clinically diagnosed based on urinalysis, biochemical changes and ultrasonography.
