ABSTRACTNon‐infective polyarthritis in the cat is classified into erosive (feline rheumatoid arthritis and feline periosteal proliferative polyarthritis) and non‐erosive (feline systemic lupus erythematosus, feline idiopathic polyarthritis) forms. Criteria are used to identify each group. Clinically, all forms are similar. Affected cats are stiff, unwilling to move and may resent any form of handling. Joints are usually swollen and painful on manipulation. Some cases are pyrexic and inappetent. Radiography demonstrates destructive changes within joints in the erosive forms and also the periosteal new bone, characteristic of the periosteal proliferative form. Soft tissue thickening is also demonstrated. Tests for the autoantibodies rheumatoid factor and antinuclear antibody are important in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Treatment is with anti‐inflammatory and immunosuppressive agents (prednisolone, cytotoxic drugs). Cats with the rheumatoid and periosteal proliferative types do not recover but some manage to cope with the lameness. ABSTRACTThe efficacy of oxfendazole, given at a dose rate of 10 mg/kg for three consecutive days, against adult and larvalToxascaris leoninawas determined in four litters of naturally infected adolescent greyhounds. When administered to five dogs 10 weeks after exposure to infectiori, oxfendazole gave an efficacy value of 100 per cent as determined by comparison of the numbers of adult worms expelled and the numbers remaining at subsequent post mortem examination. When medication was given only five weeks after exposure to infection, the number of immatureT. leoninain 10 treated pups was found to be reduced by 92‐1 per cent as compared with 10 matched, untreated controls. Similarly, in the mouse laboratory model for Sjogren's syndrome more severe lesions were found in the female. In a recent toxicity study 5‐aminosalicylic acid caused keratoconjunctivitis sicca in the dog and in this trial the females had lower average Schirmer tear test readings in all the dose groups, progression was more pronounced in the female and there was a higher incidence of keratoconjunctivitis sicca in the female than in the mal

ABSTRACTThe development of hormonal preparations to control oestrus in the bitch is briefly reviewed. The products currently available in the UK are listed and compared in respect of active principle, methods of use, price, efficacy and safety. The need to follow the advised methods of administration is emphasised. Veterinary surgeons are urged to consider in each individual case the advantages and disadvantages of ovariohysterectomy and chemical control, bearing in mind the breed and status of the bitch, and the needs of the owner. Chemical control can offer a helpful alternative where there is a hesitation to spay.

ABSTRACTMeasurements of scrotal width were strongly correlated with testicular weight in 71 dogs (r = 0–919) and thus provided a convenient index of testicular size and potential sperm production. However, to be useful in trying to predict male fertility this measurement had to be adjusted for bodyweight. A graph is presented which allows estimation of ‘average’ scrotal width and its 95 per cent confidence limits for potentially fertile dogs of bodyweight between 5 and 50 kg. ABSTRACTTen young bull terriers with physical, electrocardiographic and radiological findings suggestive of congenital mitral insufficiency were examined between 1976 and 1987. In four of these animals a definitive diagnosis was confirmed by either cardioangiography or autopsy. Congenital mitral insufficiency would appear to be a common developmental cardiac anomaly in bull terriers in Australia.
