ABSTRACTA one‐piece drainage implant consisting of an anterior chamber tube and an attached large surface area strap has been used to treat glaucoma in 15 dogs (21 eyes). The results obtained over a minimum period of nine months suggest that the technique offers a greater chance of long term control than other surgical therapies currently practised. In all patients in this series medical therapy was either inappropriate or had proved ineffective, and surgery to bypass the iridocorneal angle was considered essential if intraocular pressure control was to be achieved. The drainage implant allowed aqueous to be diverted from the anterior chamber and absorbed from a large sub‐conjunctival scar sac which developed around the strap. Four weeks after surgery 20 eyes were normotensive and by nine months after surgery only three additional eyes had become irreversibly hypertensive. No further failures have been recorded, and throughout there has been no apparent untoward reaction to the presence of the implant. ABSTRACTDiagnosing spinal conditions in dogs requires an ability to conduct and interpret a neurological examination and a knowledge of ancillary diagnostic tests. This paper discusses the approach to the dog in which spinal disease is suspected, the performance of the neurological examination, and the diagnostic aids available. The differential diagnosis of various presenting syndromes is also considered.

ABSTRACTThe plasma concentration of dapsone (4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl‐sulphone) was measured after intravenous and oral administration (±5 mg/kg) to female beagle dogs.Analysis of the plasma concentrations showed a bioavailability of the tablet of 99 per cent. The biological half‐life in plasma was estimated to be 13±4 hours after intravenous and 11±5 hours after oral application.In order to test the pharmacokinetic models for their validity a chronic experiment was performed with one dog. ABSTRACTA 12‐year old male miniature poodle with a chronic progressive cough of two years duration was found to have situs inversus totalis, rhinitis, bronchiectasis and bronchopneumonia with metaplasia. Clinical and pathological findings satisfy the clinical criteria for a diagnosis of Kartagener's syndrome. However, the dog had no history of respiratory disease during it's first year of life, it sired at least one healthy puppy and electron microscopic examination of tracheal cilia showed only minimal microtubular abnormalities. This is the first report of a miniature poodle with Kartagener's syndrome. Kartagener's syndrome and mild forms of primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) may play an important role in the development of chronic respiratory disease in older dog
