ABSTRACTSurgical treatment of acute intervertebral disc prolapse (Hansen type 1) normally requires myelography to accurately localise the lesion. When performing or interpreting myelograms in dogs with this condition, a number of problems may arise that have not been emphasised by existing radiology texts. Technical problems include difficulties injecting the contrast medium, poor distribution of contrast medium and incorrect radiographic views; pathoanatomical problems include atypical displacement of disc material and spinal cord swelling. These problems, and ways of avoiding them, are described.

ABSTRACTThis review aims to provide information on the pathophysiological principles, most of them straightforward, which underpin the successful use of fluid therapy in the treatment of certain conditions. Attention is mainly focused on the concepts underlying parenteral fluid therapy, including some of the misconceptions inherent in this form of treatment. Finally, interesting trends in parenteral fluid therapy are identified.

ABSTRACTThe case records of 26 dogs with nasal tumours, treated either with radiation alone or surgery and radiation, were compared. One‐ and two‐year actuarial survival rates for 12 dogs treated with radiotherapy were 58 and 13 per cent, respectively, compared to 71 and 38 per cent, respectively, for 14 dogs which were treated with surgery before radiotherapy. Sixty‐seven per cent of the dogs treated with radiotherapy had recurrent clinical signs by 52 weeks compared to 36 per cent of the dogs treated with surgery and radiotherapy. The longer disease‐free interval of the dogs treated with surgery and radiotherapy was statistically significant. ABSTRACTEight cats were fed a dry commercial cat food and after six months developed urinary struvite crystalluria with alkaline urine. The animals were subsequently divided into two groups and fed either a dry or a canned struvite calculolytic diet. The crystalluria was reduced after five to six weeks with both treatment diets. Decreased crystalluria coincided with a reduction in urinary pH and an increased titratable acidity. The highest food acid load, determined by the lowest undetermined anion, was found with the dry diet and resulted in the highest renal hydrogen excretion, measured as net acid excretion.
