摘要:
ABSTRACTThe features of 30 cases of canine rheumatoid arthritis are described. The disease is a chronic symmetrical polyarthritis characterized by erosive, destructive changes within the joint. The latter can be identified on radiographs by loss of mineral, the presence of discrete erosions or an irregular joint margin. Increased periarticular soft tissue is common and periosteal new bone is not unusual. The most obvious clinical feature is generalized stiffness particularly after rest. Joints are often thickened and painful on manipulation. A third of cases present with pyrexia, lethargy and inappetence in addition to lameness. Synovial fluid evaluation shows an increased number of white cells, most of which are polymorphs; the mucin clot is poor. The ESR is generally increased and rheumatoid factor (an antiglobulin auto‐antibody) is present in 73 per cent of cases. Treatment is often unrewarding, although many dogs can cope for considerable periods of tim

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe pathological features of 30 cases of canine rheumatoid arthritis are described. The principle pathological feature is a chronic symmetrical polysynovitis. The pathological features of the joints varied in severity. The synovial membrane generally showed villous hypertrophy with aggregates of lymphocytes and plasma cells. Destruction of articular cartilage and bone occurred in association with a replacement granulation tissue which often produced a pannus over the articular surface. Immunofluorescence studies demonstrated complexes of IgG or IgM with C3 in synovial lining cells, macrophages, blood vessel walls and free in the extracellular tissues. IgG and IgM producing plasma cells were also common. Fibrinogen deposits were extensive. The immunofluorescence findings were non‐specific but support the concept of an immune complex mediated inflammation within the joints. Investigations for bacterial, mycoplasmal and viral infections of the joints were negativ

摘要:
ABSTRACTPolarized light biomicroscopy was used to examine the pre‐corneal tear film in 14 normal cats. Blink rates were also determined. The normal range of surface morphology of the feline tear film was established. Two principal categories of surface patterning of the lipid layer of the tear film were identified. These occurred in all eyes examined and were: (a) a wave‐like pattern, and (b) a pattern of variable character resembling the polished surface of granite. Over most of the area of the tear film, the thickness of its lipid layer between blinks was under 0·089 μm in all cats examined. However, narrow streaks of thicker lipid (up to 0·511 μm) were occasionally observed. The mean total blink rate was 2·4/min. Overall, incomplete blinks constituted approximately 50 per cent of the total blink rate. The tear film of the cat is compared with that of man and

摘要:
ABSTRACTA case of feline eumycetoma is described. The lesions principally affected the soft tissues of the right hip and right sublumbar region and were characterized by granulomatous swelling with sinuses, discharging pus containing black granules. The latter consisted of aggregations of fungal hyphae which on culture were identified as belonging to the genus Torula. The cat died before treatment could be instigated. Previous reports of eumycetoma in animals are reviewed.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe clinical, pathological and serological findings for feline neonatal isoerythrolysis (FNI) in two litters are described. In each litter one of four kittens died shortly after birth, two showed varying degrees of depression, jaundice and haemoglobinuria and one remained healthy (clinically unaffected). Three of the kittens with jaundice died and the necropsy findings included variable degrees of erythrophagocytosis in the spleen and liver and many casts containing haemoglobin in the tubules and collecting ducts of the kidney. Blood typing and haemocompatibility testing were performed on the surviving kittens, queens and sires. Both queens and the healthy kittens were Type B while both sires and the surviving affected kitten were Type A. In both litters the queens sera haemolysed the sires erythrocytes but did not affect the erythrocytes of the healthy kittens. The erythrocytes of the surviving affected kitten were haemolysed by the serum of its queen. The pathogenesis and treatment of FNI are discussed.

摘要:
ABSTRACTSixty dogs with confirmed chronic nasal disease were examined rhinoscopically. The relative merits of the otoscope, an arthroscope and a flexible bronchoscope as instruments are discussed. Rhinoscopy has a limited place in the investigation of chronic nasal discharge in the dog due to the volume of discharge present and induced haemorrhage. It is most useful in cases of destructive rhinitis (including aspergillosis) and foreign body obstruction.

摘要:
ABSTRACTImmunofluorescent staining of epithelial cells present in urine of early clinical cases of canine distemper confirmed the presumptive diagnosis by revealing fluorescing intracytoplasmic inclusions. Positive results were not obtained in urine samples from control dogs nor from samples from dogs ill for more than three weeks. The urine samples, with added preservative, still yielded positive results after 5 days storage at 37°C or 21 days storage at 18°

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis review article considers the evidence available for a significant role of obligate anaerobes in infections of small animals. The presence of anaerobes in the normal flora and the meaning of the terms aerobe and anaerobe both in relation to the bacterial metabolism and laboratory culture is discussed. The reported findings of anaerobes in clinical veterinary conditions are reviewed. The particular importance of the non‐sporing (non‐clostridial) anaerobes in traumatic and endogenous infections and the mixed nature, both in terms of different anaerobes and mixed aerobes and anaerobes of such infection are considered. Some experimental evidence for the pathogenicity of obligate anaerobes and their complex role in mixed infections is given.Observations on the use of antibiotics for treatment of suspected anaerobic infections are discussed and the possible implications to laboratory procedures for antibiotic sensitivity test
