ABSTRACTWhile there is no single diagnostic approach, other than direct examination of the pancreas, that is completely reliable for the diagnosis of pancreatitis, a presumptive diagnosis of acute pancreatitis can be made with a good degree of confidence by careful evaluation of the entire clinical picture ‐ history and clinical signs, results of physical examination, abdominal imaging and laboratory testing. The approach to treatment is to rest the pancreas, by withholding food, while providing general supportive care by fluid therapy including, in severe cases, plasma transfusion to replace plasma protease inhibitors and albumin. Additional specific interventions in an effort to halt the progression of spontaneous pancreatitis have not yet been shown to be effective, but control of obesity and avoidance of high fat diets may help prevent pancreatitis or lessen its severity when it occurs. ABSTRACTA unilateral arytenoid lateralisation procedure was successfully performed in four cats with either unilateral or bilateral laryngeal paralysis. All of the cats were presented for the investigation of signs of exercise‐related respiratory embarrassment and stridor. Other clinical signs seen included altered vocalisation, an inability to purr, coughing and lethargy. A diagnosis of either bilateral or left or right unilateral laryngeal paralysis was made in each case following visual inspection of the vocal folds with the aid of a laryngoscope under a light plane of anaesthesia. In two cases the paralysis was bilateral and the condition was considered to be either congenital or idiopathic. In the other two cases the condition was unilateral and was considered to be iatrogenic as a result of previous surgical procedures. ABSTRACTIn a retrospective study of 155 cases of feline dystocia, 67‐1 per cent were of maternal origin, mainly caused by uterine inertia, while 29‐7 per cent were of fetal origin, mainly resulting from malpresentations/malorientations and deformities. Its breed incidence was somewhat higher in Persian cats than in other breeds and considerably lower in Norwegian forest cats. Litter size was not related to the risk of developing dystocia. Ninety‐seven cats (62.5 per cent) were treated with calcium and, or, oxytocin. Medical treatment was successful in only 29 cases (29.9 per cent). Caesarean sections were performed on 123 (79.4 per cent) of the cats that were brought to the hospital because of dystocia. ABSTRACTHistopathological findings of renal biopsies in cats and dogs with diffuse nephropathies generally lead to an exact diagnosis and facilitate prognostic judgements. Complications following renal biopsy are usually slight, provided the biopsy is performed properly. Routine renal laboratory data have been compared with histopathological findings. High urine protein values are often the result of glomerular lesions, whereas high creatinine values are frequently related to tubulointerstitial lesions. In general, there is no relationship between different types of nephropathy and age; nevertheless animals with chronic tubulointerstitial nephritis were, on average, older than animals with glomerulopathies.

ABSTRACTThe growth of the heart in proportion to body‐weight was studied by M‐mode echocardiography in 66 Spanish mastiffs aged from one to 12 months and from two to four years. Measurements of the right and left ventricular cavities, septal and parietal wall thicknesses, aorta, left atrium, D‐E excursion of the mitral valve and distance between the maximum aperture of the mitral valve and the interventricular septum, were shown to have a curvilinear increase closely related to the development of bodyweight. Least squares regression analysis of the logarithmically transformed data provided the power‐law equations relating each echocardiographic measurement to bodyweight. The exponential powers of bodyweight varied from 0.22 to 0.45. From the direct measurements the following cardiac indices were determined: ratio of right/left ventricular cavity, shortening fraction, percentage of septal and parietal wall thickness and ratio of aorta/left atrium.
