ABSTRACTSkin and mucosal carriage ofMalassezia pachydermatiswas studied in 20 healthy pet dogs of various breeds and in 20 kennelled beagles. Using swabs, anal carriage was detected in 10 pet dogs and 11 beagles and the nose, mouth, prepuce and vulva were shown to be infrequently colonised.M pachydermatiswas isolated from the external ear canal of 11 beagles and two pet dogs; both the population sizes and frequency of isolation were significantly (P<0·05) greater in the beagles. The yeast was infrequently isolated from the axilla and groin in low numbers using contact plates and detergent scrub samples but was often cultured from the lower lip and the dorsal interdigital spaces; isolation frequencies and population sizes in the two groups of dogs were not significantly different. These results demonstrate that the anus, external ear canal and lip and interdigital skin of healthy dogs are frequently colonised byM pachydermatis

ABSTRACTThe surgical repair of tracheal collapse in 25 dogs is described. The initial presenting signs included coughing, dyspnoea, gagging, retching, exercise intolerance, cyanosis and collapse. Diagnosis was based upon the clinical signs, plain radiography and tracheal endoscopy. The collapse was corrected by the application of a number of extraluminal polypropylene prosthetic rings applied to the affected trachea. Additionally, a left arytenoid lateralisation was also performed. The perioperative complication rate was approximately 4 per cent, while the success rate was 75 per cent. The technique reduces the likelihood of catastrophic postoperative complications associated with iatrogenic laryngeal paralysis which is a possible complication of placement of extraluminal tracheal support devices.

ABSTRACTThe response of dogs with insulinoma to surgical and medical management is variable, with the majority developing intractable hypoglycaemia. A long‐acting somatostatin analogue, Octreotide (SMS 201–995; Sandostatin) has been useful in the management of hypoglycaemia in humans with insulinoma, and preliminary reports suggest a beneficial clinical response in dogs with insulinoma. The present study objectively evaluated Octreotide in the management of three dogs with immunohistochemically confirmed insulinoma. Octreotide had no benefit over placebo, and little effect on circulating glucose and insulin concentrations despite clearly detectable plasma concentrations of Octreotide. No clinical improvement was apparent in two dogs given Octreotide over a period of two and three weeks. These results contrast with the positive clinical responses noted previously and indicate that further placebo controlled, objective studies are necessary before clear statements on the treatment of insulinoma with Octreotide are m

ABSTRACTThis study presents the estimates of heritability for spondylosis deformans in the boxer based on 353 offspring from 24 randomly selected sires, each with at least three radiographically investigated offspring. The estimated heritability (h2) for maximum degree of osteophyte development was high, both when estimated by paternal half‐sib correlation (0·42) and by the regression of offspring based on the parents (0·62). The heritability for the number of affected discs estimated by paternal half‐sib correlation was also high (0·47). The estimate of heritability for the number of affected discs based on regression of offspring on the parents was lower at 0·13. All heritabilities had large standard errors. A positive phenotypic correlation between spondylosis deformans and hip dysplasia was observed. Assuming a significant portion of the correlation is genetic, this fact may permit selection against spondylosis deformans without negatively influencing the incidence of hip dysplasia. Since the incidence of spondylosis deformans is high even in young dogs, it should be possible to detect a large proportion of genetically predisposed animals by radiographic examination of the spine at one year of age; at the same time that dogs are presented for a routine test for hip dy
