摘要:
ABSTRACTA total of 28 dogs bearing bone‐involved tumours of the oral cavity underwent radical excision procedures including premaxillectomy, mandibular symphysectomy and removal of the horizontal body or vertical ramus of the mandible. Subsequent return to normal feeding was rapid and long‐term prehensile and masticatory function was considered to be good with prosthetic reconstruction necessary in only one case.Amongst the 23 malignant tumours in this series the actuarial survival rate at twelve months was markedly improved in the case of the squamous cell carcinoma and osteosarcoma over that for conventional treatment techniques. No significant improvement was seen in the cases of fibrosarcoma. All five dogs undergoing surgery for benign tumours are surviving tumour free.Radical surgical excision is a practical approach to the management of otherwise complex mandibular and premaxillary tumours providing good tumour‐free function and improvement in prognosis for certain histological

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe association between breed, sex and canine heart valve incompetence was investigated by means of an observational study of a veterinary clinic population. Odds ratio estimations revealed statistically significant positive associations between some small and medium‐sized breeds and heart valve incompetence, and significant negative associations between some large breeds and heart valve incompetence. The log odds, determined for each breed and sex, indicated that males were more susceptible than female

摘要:
ABSTRACTShock is a caricature of the physiological response to haemorrhage; as it progresses, the defensive attributes are replaced by adverse effects on circulation, reticuloendothelial function, respiration and metabolism. Haemorrhage is only one possible cause of shock and any severe reduction of circulating fluid volume can potentially trigger similar responses. Indeed despite the existence of several types of shock (e.g. anaphylactic, endotoxin, septic) the ‘final common path’ is remarkably similar and consists of a widespread failure of capillary perfusion. The essential prerequisite for effective perfusion is not merely the presence of blood in capillaries but its efficient movement through them. Thus viscosity is a key property of blood in shock and a limited fall in PCV may improve oxygen delivery. The pathophysiology of shock is discussed in relation to its therapeutic implications, notably the relative importance of fluid therapy, antibiotics and corticosteroids, the limitations on the effectiveness of antihistamines and α‐blockers, and more recent work with Mg‐ATP, hypertonic solutions, prostaglandins, endogenous opiates and
