Abstract—Because of the immaturity of the newborn, normal compensation to stressors (environmental or pathogens) does not take place or is inadequate and this lack of specific responsiveness to specific stressors is characteristic of the neonate dog. The reaction, however, is nonspecific and is seen following a variety of stressors. The pathophysiology of this phenomenon is related to the immaturity and instability of homeostatic mechanisms at birth in the neonate dog. The cardiovascular responses are mainly responsible for the early onset of a syndrome which, if the causal stressor is not eliminated or adapted to, becomes irreversible and a state of cardio‐pulmonary failure (C.P.F.) ensues. Physiologic responses of affected subjects and post‐mortem findings support the clinical evidence that cardiopulmonary failure is a syndrome commonly associated with neonatal mortality which is dependent upon the immaturity of the organism at birth and the lack of homeostatic responsiveness to a variety of environmental or nutritional stressors. Bacterial or viral infections may supervene, however. Symptomatically septicemia neonatorum (“fading”) and cardio‐pulmonary failure precipitated by infection or environmental stress respectively, may be differentiated on post‐mortem and bacteriological investigation.

Abstract—This is a short refresher article on some aspects of kidney physiology and pathology. It is not intended as a comprehensive review of the subject and sets out to discuss the normal function of the kidney and some of the changes which occur in disease, in outline only.Résumé—Cet article, simple rappel de quelques aspects de physiologie et de pathologie des reins, ne prétend pas être une revue complète de cette question.
