摘要:
ABSTRACTTwo thousand two hundred and fifty‐one golden and 1399 labrador retrievers were examined for certification under the BVA/Kennel Club eye examination scheme. Cataracts were diagnosed in 7.4 per cent of golden retrievers and 6.6 per cent of labrador retrievers; of these 4.7 per cent and 5.5 per cent, respectively, were of the posterior polar subcapsular (PPS) type and considered to be hereditary. Additional cases were examined as referrals. The PPS cataracts, essentially bilateral and always located at the confluence of the suture lines, were most commonly encountered in young dogs but could arise at any age. Over half of the cases re‐examined after periods ranging from 12 to 34 months showed no or only slight progression but evidence was obtained for the occasional transformation of a PPS cataract into a total cataract. The hypothesis of dominant inheritance, probable from the pedigree data, received further support from instances of cataracts in retriever crosses. A perinuclear form of cataract, for which there was limited evidence for inheritance, was encountered almost exclusively in the golden retrie

摘要:
ABSTRACTGranulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis (GME) is a well recognised disease entity affecting dogs. It manifests in a wide variety of clinical syndromes. The lesion is characterised by focal or disseminated non‐caseating granulomas in the brain and spinal cord, non‐suppurative meningitis and marked perivascular lymphoid cuffing. The clinical signs can be acute and rapidly progressive or can manifest as a chronic relapsing disease. In this survey, 12 clinical cases were referred to Murdoch University Veterinary Hospital and nine cases were submitted for necropsy. While cerebrospinal fluid examination in seven of these cases suggested inflammatory disease, necropsy confirmed the presence of GME. An immunohistochemical technique for detection of distemper virus antigen failed to identify the presence of distemper virus antigen in any of the cases. It was concluded that distemper virus was not involved in the aetiology of these 21 cases all of which were confirmed by post mortem examinat

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe coaxial circuits, the Bain and Lack, are suitable anaesthetic circuits for use for small animals. The advantages and disadvantages of these circuits are considered in this review article along with recommendations for an adequate fresh gas flow.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe analgesic effects of acupuncture were studied in 38 dogs affected by acute thoracolumbar disc disease, type I to IV. Steel acupuncture needles were inserted into selected acupuncture points. Stimulation time was 20 minutes. Electrical stimulation of needles, ear‐acupuncture, vitamins B and C and antibiotics were occasionally used in some dogs of types I and II and in the majority of types III and IV. Pain relief was observed in 62.5 per cent of dogs of type I (back‐pain), in 70.5 per cent of dogs of type II (hindlimb paresis, backpain) and in 39 per cent of dogs of types III and IV (hindlimb paralysis, backpain) after the first acupuncture treatment. Dogs of type I and II responded significantly better (P<0.01) than dogs of type III and IV at the fourth treatment (100 per cent and 61.5 per cent, respective

摘要:
ABSTRACTMultiple digital swelling and painful lameness in four cats was found on clinical, radiographic and post mortem examination to be due to metastasis of primary bronchial carcinoma. Metastases were identified in several organs at necropsy and histological findings were consistent with arterial dissemination from the primary lesion.

摘要:
ABSTRACTOesophageal obstruction caused by a hairball is described in a nine‐year‐old Persian cat. Diagnosis was based upon radiological and oesophagoscopic findings. The obstruction was managed conservatively by forceps delivery of part of the hair, repulsion of the remainder into the stomach, and oral laxative medication. The fur was clipped prophylactically. At follow up one month later, oesophageal function was nor
