ABSTRACTCystoscopy plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of urological problems in man. Until recently its use in dogs was limited to rigid endoscopy in the bitch. With modern flexible fibre‐optic instruments the majority of male dogs can also be examined without the need for surgical intervention. This paper describes the techniques used and the cystoscopic findings in a series of 38 clinical cases. In 24 of these, abnormal findings were present permitting a diagnosis to be made or confirmed. ABSTRACTForty‐two dogs bearing tumours of the rectum or the pararectal tissues were examined over a 3 year period. The presenting clinical signs, diagnostic techniques and management are described. The prognosis was found to be guarded irrespective of the histological type. The mean survival times for malignant epithelial tumours of the rectal wall was 6–9 months, for rectal lymphomas 6‐5 months and for pararectal tumours 10‐6 months. ABSTRACTMeasurements of the heart and thorax were made on lateral and ventrodorsal thoracic radiographs of normal cats. The degree of correlation between selected cardiac and thoracic measurements was determined. Absolute measurements and ratios of measurements in normal cats and in cats with certain cardiac diseases were compared and their diagnostic value was evaluated. It was concluded that on the lateral thoracic radiograph the ratio of the cranio‐caudal width of the heart to the distance between the cranial border of the fifth rib and the caudal border of the seventh rib was a highly reliable indicator of cardiac enlargement. ABSTRACTIn a group of 112 dogs with pyometra, 31 per cent showed a normal red blood cell picture, 57 per cent non‐regenerative normocytic normochromic anaemia and 12 per cent non‐regenerative microcytic hypochromic anaemia. The non‐regenerative anaemia was absent or moderate at lower white blood cell levels and markedly present at high to extreme white blood cell counts. The degree of non‐regenerative anaemia was positively correlated with the degree of leucocytosis, neutrophilia, left shift and monocytosis. The more pronounced non‐regenerative microcytic hypochromic anaemia, indicating a more severe chronic blood loss, was usually encountered at extremely high white blood cell levels. ABSTRACTClinical and laboratory findings are presented from two cases of canine IgA multiple myeloma. One of these animals presented with typical clinical and pathological changes including haematological abnormalities and skeletal lesions with secondary invasion of other organs. In contrast, the primary focus of disease in the second dog was the anterior alimentary tract and there were no skeletal changes. In this respect this second case was similar to the condition in man known as alpha chain disease. The two paraproteins differed in electrophoretic mobility.
