ABSTRACTA 19‐month‐old cat investigated because of depression, anorexia, polyuria, and polydipsia was found to have hepatomegaly, retinal haemorrhages, and distended tortuous retinal veins. Prolonged bleeding occurred after venipuncture, and serum was hyperviscous due to an immunoglobulin M monoclonal gammopathy. Prothrombin and activated partial thromboplastin times were prolonged, thrombin clotting time was only slightly prolonged and the activities of coagulation factors VII, VIII and IX were normal. The cat died suddenly before the origin of the immunoglobulin could be determined. Hepatic plasmacytoid lymphosarcoma was found at post‐mortem examination. SUMMARYThe aerobic bacterial flora from the genital tracts of 143 bitches and 51 dogs was investigated. Betahaemolytic streptococci(group G),Staphylococcus aureusandEscherichia coliwere among the organisms isolated from normal bitches in heat, abnormal bitches and normal dogs. Repeated sampling of two bitches during oestrus, and the dog to which they were mated, showed that bacteria were transmitted from bitch to dog, but did not become established. Guarded swab samples taken from the vagina collected less bacteria than samples from the vestibule. Numerous bacteria were seen in vaginal smears taken from bitches during oestrus, but numbers fell rapidly with the appearance of leucocytes in the smear at the onset of metoestrus.

ABSTRACTFour dogs with a history of infertility were found on examination to be azoospermic. Three of the dogs were related (a sire and two male offspring) and investigation revealed that some of their male ancestors had been of reduced fertility. There were degenerative changes in 20–40 per cent of the seminiferous tubules, a proportion of which were associated with a focal peritubular orchitis. There was a complete absence of spermatozoa in the rete testis, the vasa efferentia and the epididymis. The possibility that the condition is of an autoimmune nature is discussed. ABSTRACTOver several years, the mass of hair shed weekly by a normal Alsatian bitch varied cyclically. Base‐line values were less than 5 grams, while the maximum loss recorded was over 70 grams. Moults (and, by implication, the growth of new hairs which must have preceded them) were related to the bitch's oestrous cycle, always occurring shortly before or coincidentally with the onset of pro‐oestrus, even when megestrol acetate was administered to prevent ovulation or to re‐time the oestrous cycle. ABSTRACTThe diameter and area of the seminiferous tubules and the thickness of the germinal epithelium was measured in testes removed from clinically normal dogs of different breeds and mixed ages over a 24 month period which were presented for elective castration or euthanasia. Peripheral plasma testosterone concentrations were determined at the same time.There was no effect of the season of the year on the tubular diameter, thickness of germinal epithelium or tubular area. There was evidence of an effect of age upon tubular diameter and thickness of the germinal epithelium.Peripheral plasma testosterone concentrations were significantly higher in summer and autumn than in winter and spring, but age appeared to have no effect.
