The biosynthesis of nucleic acids has been evaluated in biopsy samples of pilomatrixoma using in vitro incorporation of 6-3H-thymidine (DNA) or 5-3H-uridine (RNA). The uptake of labelled thymidine is high in the outer layer of the epithelial lobes and absent in cells displaying the first histological signs of differentiation. The uptake of labelled uridineis larger and extends up to the cells displaying signs of nuclear alterations. The various connective tissues cells incorporate the two types of labelled precursors but giant cells take up only the labelled uridine.

(1) Fetal rat skin of 17-day-old embryos was cultured up to 8 days in vitro.(2) Within 3–4 days a complete adult epidermis was formed in vitro. The stages that lead to this formation and the time necessary for it were slightly different in vitro and in vivo. No skin adnexa were formed. (3) Actinomycin D (at 0.02 μg/ml) and puromycin (at 0.1 μg/ml) failed to inhibit the differentiation and the morphological effect of it: i.e. stratum corneum formation. At higher doses a total degeneration of the stratum corneum occurred. (4) It was clear from the incorporation experiments with 3H-thymidine that a labelled component released from DNA breakdown in the stratum granulosum was re-used for DNA synthesis in the nuclei of the basal cell la

A study of the hygrophotographic records of the palmar surface of the right hand of a 9 year-old female subject was started in 1955 and continued until 1971, to the age of 25.It was noted that during the 16 years, there was no change in the palmar pattern of the right hand of this subject. The results indicate that this method might be useful for personal identification and in the study of genetical problems concerning der matoglyphics.

A 62-year-old missionary sister suffered from abdominal pains and diarrhoea since she left the Congo in 1939. For the last 20 years she also had recurrent attacks of itching during which she showed rapidly migrating linear urticarial weals on the skin of the abdomen and thighs. After she received prednisone, her skin lesions became generalized and her stools, which had been negative for worms, showed rhabditiform larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis. Eosinophilia was an irregular finding in this patient. She improved rapidly after two courses of thiabendazole.
