A report is presented of a 5-year clinical trial during which 78 patients suffering from discoid lupus erythematosus were treated with 1-percent betametasone 17-valerate in an oil/water emulsion cream. In 10 cases, local treatment had to be supplemented by the oral administration of chloroquine for shorter or longer periods. On the whole, this therapy represented a great advance, the majority of the patients being kept completely or almost completely free of symptoms by means of local treatment alone. No steroid-induced atrophy of the epidermis was observed. It should be emphasized that the patients were checked at intervals of a few months and were carefully instructed as to the procedure to be followed during the local treatment.

Rubella antibody titers were measured in psoriatic patients using the HAH test. Some patients received immuno-suppressive therapy while others did not. The difference between antibody titers in both groups was not significant. Antibody titers in patients with verified rubella did not change after a booster vaccination. Advantages and disadvantages of the peroxidase test with Treponema pallidum and the FTA-ABS test were compared. The results were veryfied through the TPI test. Sera from diseased patients suffering from various forms of syphilis, from patients with other clinical histories and from a group of (relatively) healthy persons (blood donors) were the object of the examinations. An absolute conformity of the peroxidase and FTA reaction was attained in 87.5% of cases. The authors analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of both reactions and concluded that the peroxidase reaction can be carried out only in highly specialized laboratories and therefore does not represent a dramatic back-up of the routine diagnostics of syphilis.

Report on a case of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans that was observed clinically and histologically for 15 years. During the course of the disease seven recurrences occurred being characterized by an increasing tendency for malignancy. The tumours showed an increasing number of densely packed cells and revealed a predominantly infiltrating growth, which finally lead to the diagnosis of fibrosarcoma in the latest stage of the disease.

In testing carefully selected and matched series of patients with hand eczema and their controls it was concluded that: (1) patients with healed hand eczema had a normal alkali neutralization and a normal alkali resistance on their legs, provided the eczema was healed. Therefore, the value of these tests in pre-employment testings to find ‘eczematous subjects’ could not be confirmed. (2) Patients with active eczema limited to the hands have a normal alkali neutralization and alkali resistance tests on their legs. This is relevant to ‘alkali eczema’. However, when the eczema involves other areas besides the hands, the alkali resistance test done on the normal looking skin of the legs is lowered. This seems to be due to a general non-specific increased skin reactivity to irritants which is provoked by the presence of the active eczema – ‘status eczematicus’. A method is presented for the simultaneous measurement of the two enzymes involved in purine salvage in human hair roots. Km values of hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl transferase (HG-PRT) for hypoxanthine and 5′-phosphoribosyl-1-pyrophosphate (PRPP) and of adenine phosphoribosyl transferase (A-PRT) for adenine and PRPP in human hair roots were similar to values reported for human erythrocytes. The chemical composition of isolated human hair melanosomes was studied. It was found that hair melanosomes contained 60.54 ± 3.99% of melanin which puts them among the most melanized particles. A double-blind, controlled multi-centre trial with 238 patients was employed to study the relative merits of three treatment schedules in acne vulgaris. Schedule A consisted of oral oxytetracycline and topical vitamin A acid cream (0.05%), schedule B of oral oxytetracycline alone, and schedule C of vitamin A acid alone. Large and statistically significant reductions occurred in the number of come dones, papules and pustules during 8 weeks of therapy, which could be attributed neitherto placebo effects nor to natural history of the disease.
