On the basis of own investigations and a survey of the literature, it is shown that the recurrence rate following various types of treatment used for basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is somewhat higher than generally assumed. Irrespective of the method used, the results obtained after treatment of recurrent BCCs are less favorable. Consequently, it is strongly recommended that patients be closely controlled for a period of years following treatment and that only specially trained doctors carry out the treatment. The possibility of centralizing treatment of BCC of the skin to dermatological units is put forward.

Transmission electron microscopic study of the bizarre infiltrating cells from a case of lymphomatoid papulosis reveals intranuclear and intracytoplasmic viruslike particles. These cells have large nuclei with multiple nucleoli, scant to moderate profiles of rough endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria and a variable number of lysosomes. It is suggested that these abnormal cells are macrophages showing viral cytopathogenic effects.

A patient with bullous pemphigoid, not responding to prednisone, had impaired cellular immunity. Transfer factor (TF) was given in doses of 10 U/m2 intramuscularly to improve T cell immunity, at a frequency of 3 times to once a week. Clinical improvement fluctuated with changes in the frequency of TF injections. The skin has been clear of the lesions for the past 9 months. Her T cell functions became normal and serum IgE decreased from 900 U/ml to 270 U/ml. She has received a total of 1,732 U of TF. This report is intended to encourage investigation into T cell functions in patients with bullous pemphigoid and controlled trials of TF in this disease.

The effect of ultraviolet-B light provided by TL-12 fluorescent lamps was investigated in 45 patients with psoriasis vulgaris. 33 (73.3%) of the 45 patients showed considerable and rapid improvement during UV-B therapy. Scopulariopsis brevicaulis was demonstrated in 226 out of 5,600 patients examined for abnormal toe-nails. Among 3,700 patients without onychomycosis S. brevicaulis was demonstrated as a contaminant in 2%. Onychomycosis, present in 1,925 patients, was caused by S. brevicaulis in 6%, but 10% of these cases were mixed infections with dermatophytes. In the approximately 1,800 cases of onychomycosis due to other reasons, S. brevicaulis was a contaminant in 2%. A specific finding of S. brevicaulis on direct microscopy is diagnostic, and a number of colonies ≥ 10 supports the diagnosis, while in the presence of ≤ 3 colonies and no S. brevicaulis on direct microscopy the diagnosis is unlikely. Two cutaneously and subcutaneously localized nodules of the left mamma from a 66-year-old patient were excised. The lesions were flesh-colored, firm and well circumscribed. Sections of the tumors show the typical aspects of granular cell tumor. The lesions were both surrounded by a condensation of fibrous tissue which formed a capsule. This condensation of fibrous tissue resembled and on some sections was in continuity with the perineurium of a nerve. In addition to that is the finding of granular cells situated within a nerve fascicle and apparently replacing several, or all, of the nerve fibres.
