This comparison of the two diseases – pemphigus and pemphigoid – aimed particularly on points of actual interest. Are thus reviewed: (1) the research on the influence of racial or genetic factors in pemphigus vulgaris; (2) the striking differences between the immunological criteria of the two; (3) the clinical polymorphism of pemphigus: besides pemphigus superficialis, non-bullous forms, usually milder, of various types: herpetiformis, circinate ... are now being described; (4) the importance in all cases of eosinophilic spongiosis; (5) the clinical monomorphism of classical bullous pemphigus; on the contrary, the differences, both from clinical and prognostic points of view, in localized bullous pemphigoid (from the benign mucocutaneous form to the severe scarring disease) and in bullous pemphigoid of children; (6) the cases of genuine pemphigus induced by drugs D-penicillamine, rifampicine) and the problem of the pemphigus-like antibodies; (7) bullous pemphigoid, UV light and practolol; (8) the outstanding association of two major immune diseases, pemphigus vulgaris, myasthenia and thymorna; (9) the mixed bullous dermatoses: pemphigus vulgaris and dermatosis herpetiformis (to separate from herpetiform pemphigus), bullous pemphigoid and dermatosis herpetiformis (bringing up the unsolved problem of mixed or intermediate forms of the two diseases), bullous pemphigoid and pemphigus vulgaris, exceptionally seen, and (10) some news on ther

A patient with pemphigus vulgaris is presented. In addition to the intercellular deposits of immunoglobulin and complement in the Malpighian layer which is consistent with pemphigus vulgaris, concomitant granular deposits of IgG and C3 were demonstrated at the dermal epidermal junction, similar to the findings in lupus erythematosus.

25 cases of primary cutaneous amyloidosis are studied. 16 patients had macular amyloidosis (MPA) and 9 lichen amyloidosus (LPA). γ-Globulins were increased in 50% of the patients. IgG and IgA were increased in the serum of 5 and 3 patients with MPA and 4 and 2 patients with LPA, respectively. Volume of amyloid deposits was similar in both forms. By direct immunofluorescence we demonstrated IgG in the amyloid deposits of 21 of the 25 cases and C3 in 13; IgM was present in 9 cases of MPA and in 3 cases of LPA. MPA was more frequent than LPA; histologically, it was impossible to distinguish MPA from LPA; correlation between serum levels of γ-globulins and their presence in amyloid deposits was weak; MPA and LPA seem to be distinct clinical manifestations of the same disease and itching does not cause transformation of MPA in LP

The patch test results from 1,000 patients tested with the ICDRG standard series are analyzed for positive reactions to potassium dichromate, nickel sulphate, and cobalt chloride. Nickel appears to be the most common sensitizer, especially among women, although false-negative reactions may occur if it is tested with a 2.5% concentration in yellow petrolatum. Chromate dermatitis is generally of occupational origin among men. It is also quite common among Belgian women, probably because of the widespread use of Javel® (liquid bleach), containing sodium dichromate as a colouring and stabilizing agent. Positive patch test reactions to cobalt are generally accompanied by allergic reactions to nickel or chromate. Its role as a primary allergen, however, must never be overlooked. The relationship between these metals and hand and foot eczema is evaluated. The results of a follow-up questionnaire are given. More than 70% of the patients allergic to chromates or nickel continued to suffer from contact eczema after the diagnosis had been made and therapeutic measures taken

This study compares the effects on the hypothalamo-pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis of two dosage schedules of hydrocortisone 17-butyrate and hydrocortisone ointments in 20 children suffering from eczema. Children with moderately extensive eczema received either 30 g of 0.1% hydrocortisone 17-butyrate or 30 g of 1% hydrocortisone ointment weekly for 4 weeks without occlusion. Children with extensive eczema received either 60 g of hydrocortisone 17-butyrate or 60 g of hydrocortisone weekly for 4 weeks. All four groups showed some clinical improvement. Although many of the children appeared to have some impairment of adrenal function prior to entering the trial, no further significant depression of the HPA axis as reflected by the plasma ACTH levels and a 30-min Synacthen test was observed during the trial. On the basis of 4 weeks’ treatment, hydrocortisone 17-butyrate did not have a significantly different effect on the HPA axis in children from that of hydrocortison

Linear porokeratosis is a rare variant of porokeratosis of Mibelli and usually occurs in childhood. A 15-year-old boy is presented with typical clinical lesions of linear porokeratosis on the extensor surface of the right arm exhibiting the classical histopathologic criteria of the disease. Treatment with an oral aromatic retinoid resulted in a remission of the lesion.

Penicillinase-producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae were looked for in a series of 146 patients consulting the Dermatology and Venereology Policlinic of the Cantonal Hospital of Geneva for urethral discharge. A 6-month study revealed no case with total resistance to penicillin. Our results are exposed and briefly commented.

Peripilar hair casts are a pathological occurrence which is probably greater than the few reports seem to suggest. In 2 patients the authors have found fine, whitish nodular accretions of epithelial cells and keratinous debris surrounding the hair shafts of the scalp over a length of 3–7 mm located at various distances from the base of the hair along which they can freely move.
